Jack helped the girls on the horse, then got on himself. He was grateful for his purchase. It would be a long trip without it. He’d never gone back so soon, but he didn’t mind at all. He knew Kendra wouldn’t mind either, although he didn’t know what she’d think of his friends. He was sure she’d be thrilled to meet more humans, but one never could know about the moods of a female. Would she be jealous? Would she be upset to have more people know about her land? He had to take the chance. Snowlindria’s life was at stake.

He was foolish to say he wouldn’t go back. Of course, he wanted to help; he just didn’t want to take anything that belonged to Kendra. Maybe she’d allow him to borrow it once he explained the urgency. He meant what he said, he no longer wanted to steal to get by. Heck, he never wanted to do it in the first place. Somehow it even seemed worse accepting Kendra’s charity. If he could only find his father…

“Can you tell us about the harp, Jack?” Samantha said, interrupting his daydreams. The girls could tell he was disturbed; they were trying their best to keep his mind occupied with small talk.

“Huh,” he said as he turned to face her better.

“Can you tell us anything about the harp? I’m wondering what magic it has that the dwarves don’t.”

“I don’t know much of anything about its magic. It does play by itself while Kendra sings, though,” he explained.

“Is there a lady carved into it?” asked Val. She remembered one in a book or movie that actually sang.

“No. It’s a regular harp, but it looks like it’s made of solid gold.”

His answers were short and to the point. The girls could tell he wasn’t up for talking and finally gave up.

He became deep in thought again. He didn’t know how to tell the girls he was actually friends with Kendra. That was going to be a tough one to explain. Even worse, if there was such a thing as love at first sight, he was in it bad. He finally met a girl and she could probably hold his house in one hand. What was he thinking? Despite the girls’ effort to keep him engaged in small talk, his mind wandered back to Kendra.
