Buoyed by the hearty singing in the tavern, Robert walked through the fairy-tale-looking forest full of flowers in bloom. He noticed butterflies gently fluttering past. But the placid scene was broken by a scream.

Robert drew his sword as he rushed to a small clearing. There he saw fire shooting from the mouth of a cave.

He was elated.

A group of villagers stood nearby and milled about. Running to the group, Robert noticed that the villagers looked tired—all of them except for a little boy.

“Are you a dragon slayer?” the little boy asked.

“I am,” Robert confirmed. “And never fear, I shall slay the beast!”

“I wouldn’t if I were you,” one of the villagers said weakly. “It’s very large.”

“And cranky,” another villager added.

“A cranky dragon is just what I’m looking for,” Robert vowed. “Won’t be a minute.”

Taking a deep breath, Robert charged into the cave with his trusted sword leading the way.

Then he was thrown out of the cave.

He hit the ground hard. The villagers winced at Robert’s predicament.

“Yes,” Robert said, brushing himself off as he got to his feet. “Quite cranky.”

Robert once more raced toward the cave, this time a little less enthusiastically.

Fire shot from the cave entrance, and Robert ran back.

“That is very hot,” Robert admitted.

“You’re on fire, sir,” one of the villagers whispered, pointing at his sleeve.

Robert looked down and quickly patted the sleeve, putting the fire out.

“Have you done this before?” the little boy asked.

“Oh, yes,” Robert said. “I’ve slain many a dragon. I think. The key is not to give up.”

Once more, Robert ran into the cave and was thrown out again.

And again.

And again. Every time he was thrown out, he became dirtier and more bruised.

That continued until finally a giant rock fell in front of the mouth of the cave. The dragon was trapped inside.

All the villagers looked up to see the little boy holding a large branch, which he had used as a lever to push the rock. The little boy gazed at the villagers, proud of his victory over the dragon.

Robert, who was very dirty and bruised, brushed himself off. He tried to cover his embarrassment.

“Yes,” he said, looking at the little boy and his lever. “That works, too.”
