Eight portrait statues adorn the four corners of the monument. Except for that of Abraham Lincoln, the statues recognize prominent Pennsylvanians: Governor Andrew Curtin, General George Meade (shown adjacent to Lincoln), First Corps commander John Reynolds, Second Corps commander Winfield Scott Hancock, Major General David Birney, Brigadier General Augustus Pleasonton, and Brigadier General David Gregg, a cavalry division commander.
Around the perimeter of the monument are ninety bronze tablets containing the names of Pennsylvanians who fought at Gettysburg. The logistics of gathering all the names proved daunting, and many mistakes were made. Those mistakes are still being dealt with today, nearly 150 years later.
The cost of the monument exceeded $180,000, a princely sum in 1910 when it was dedicated. This made the Pennsylvania State Memorial the most expensive on the battlefield.
