Chapter Seven

Sabotaging lab samples and helping aliens escape captivity made for a stressful life. Jennifer constantly worried about getting caught. She had been apprehensive about being alone with a bunch of aggressive alpha male mercenary types. She’d dreaded whenever Dr. Hanklen walked into a room.

None of that compared to the fear churning inside her now. They were trapped in a forest surrounded by armed mercenaries of an unknown number. The car was in the clearing, so close, yet too far to run to.

Maybe she could make it. Maybe they wouldn’t shoot her, the esteemed Dr. Petals. Out of all of them, her going made the most sense.

Jennifer took a deep breath. She could make it. Adrenaline would give her speed.

One. Two.

Jennifer tensed—and nearly screamed as Elle grabbed her arm. In her heightened state, the contact caused her heart to leap wildly in her chest.

“Thank you,” Elle whispered.

“For what?” Jennifer wasn’t sure how to react. How did the woman know she planned to run for the car?

“For helping us escape the desert facility,” Elle answered. “I didn’t know you had done that, but it makes sense that we would have had help.”

It was a little weird to be thanked regarding a conversation they’d had while driving, but Jennifer nodded in acceptance, knowing it had taken a lot for a woman like Elle to say the words. “You’re welcome.”

“We should go deeper into the woods,” Frost said. “Maybe we will find shelter or help.”

“We don’t know what is out there,” Ice countered.

Jennifer felt Snow’s gaze on her. His nearness made her feel brave. He and his brothers had faced so much to come to Earth, and for the hope of finding love. How could she fault them for that? In many ways it was such a noble goal, much more so than hunting aliens to do scientific experiments on in hopes of some advancement. Dr. Hanklen didn’t even know what he was looking for. He just looked.

Jennifer took a deep breath and stood. She stepped into the clearing with her hands lifted.

The car engine revved to life, stalling her movements. Before she could make it more than two paces, something heavy hit her back.

She fell forward. Snow had knocked her over and landed to her side to shield her body.

“Snow, get her back here,” Meg called.

Jennifer struggled. “Let me do this. I can make it to—”

The sound of the car broke through her plea as she realized someone was driving toward them. She pushed up, pulling Snow to come with her. The car wove before the back end swung to the side, skidding around to a stop in front of them.

A shot rang out, then another. More glass shattered.

“Get in,” Gary ordered.

Snow reached for the back door, opening it before tugging Jennifer toward it and forcing her inside—not that she would have protested the rescue. Snow slid toward her on the seat, then Meg and Frost. Snow pulled her head down toward his lap and leaned over her. The cocoon of his body kept her from seeing anything but the space between his legs.
