Chapter Thirteen

SMOKE

“We just spent our first two holidays together, Speaks. My mom and sister now call yo’ ass more than they check foe me and shit. You locked in, on some official shit,” I told her.

“Two holidays? Really nigga? Since when does the Fourth of July and Labor Day count as relationship holidays? Be for real, bruh,” Lauren muttered.

“Bruh? Who you talking to Speaks? Don’t get ahead of yourself, Lo. I’m your bruh, now? That’s how you carrying it?” I inquired in my voice low.

“Just saying, the relationship holidays are Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and birthdays. Tell me I’m lying.”

“Girl, every day with me is a fuckin’ holiday. The fuck you thought?”

“I meannnnn, yeah you got that,” she flirted, sucking in her bottom lip.

“Smokkkee, the door!” Mookie yelled from the living room.

Planting a quick kiss on Lauren’s soft lips, I walked out the room to see who was at the door. I doubled back to get another peck causing her to chuckle and push me towards the door. This time I grabbed her hand, practically dragging her along. Another knock fell upon the door. As we made it to the front I saw the door handle jiggle, as if the person on the other side was trying to let themselves in. I glanced at the time and realized it must have been Red and Mia since we were all supposed to be going to dinner soon.

“Only time you on time is for food with your greedy ass,” I joked, snatching the door open. “Layla?”

“Baby, I’ve been trying to call you. We need to talk. Why you block me with your mean ass?” Layla rambled, her hands moving towards my face. I jerked my body away from her grasp. What the hell was she doing here? My eyes took a quick sweep of her face. Looking for answers on why she’d just showed up at my spot almost four months after our breakup. Life was good over here. Not opening the door any wider, I questioned why she was darkening my doorstep. Lauren huffed behind me. Layla damn near broke her neck trying to peep around me to see who was in the house with me.

“Out of respect for my girl.”

“Ya’ girl? You don’t even move that fast. Anyway, you want me to come in or you coming out? Because again… we need to talk,” she demanded.

“Let’s talk right here. Say what you have to say,” I persisted.

“Well… I’m pregnant,” she delivered.

“Well, what’s that got to do with me, Layla?”

“It’s your baby Smoke!” blurted.

“Stop playing with me, Layla,” I roared.

“Moochie, let’s get your bag baby. It’s time to go,” Lauren rattled in the background.

“Yeah, she should be leaving. I told you this would be a private moment.”

“How in the world is this my baby and I ain’t stuck my… we ain’t even seen each other in months!” I corrected my words looking back towards Moochie.

Layla pushed the door open showing her perfectly rounding belly. The realization that she had to be at least four months hit me like a ton of bricks.
