SEBASTIAN STOPPED at a gas station so Dee could climb in front. He bought her a lemon ice, which melted in the cup before she took a single taste. They sat in miserable silence. Sebastian rolled the window down and smoked. “It’s meth,” he told Dee.

“Meth,” Dee repeated.

“I might be wrong. But I think that’s what it is.”

“Why did you hit Harmon?”

“Didn’t like his face.”

Dee laughed without humor.

“I had to,” he said.

“If Harmon presses charges, then you’re going back in.”

“He won’t. He probably gets his ass beat every Monday morning. He’s just a thug not worth a thought.”

“I hope you’re right,” said Dee.

He gripped the back of her neck lightly and stroked her cheek. “It’s gonna be okay.”

“Now I really have nothing,” said Dee in a monotone. She felt exhausted. She just wanted to sleep.

“You have freedom. That’s not nothing.”

She flinched. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Don’t be sorry. I get it, Dee.” His voice was pitched low, calming. She wondered if he’d learned to do that in prison.“But your words have power. Remember that. You don’t need these people.”

“You’re right.”

“My cousin Emme…Remember I told you about Emme?”

“Yeah, I remember.”

“After what happened to her, she started on drugs. Fell off the face of the earth. We don’t know where she is. Her family— that’s my Mama’s side— don’t speak to me because they think it’s my fault, somehow. Whatever— the point is, you make your own family sometimes.”

Dee nodded.

“I’ll be your family,” Sebastian said. “You can call on me for anything. Even if we ain’t fooling around, I’ll hold you all the way down. I promise.”

She nodded again, and took his hand, pressing it to her cheek. Her chin trembled but she didn’t cry.

“You’re so motherfucking tough, Dee,” Sebastian said. “You’re so tough. Don’t let them get you down. Your heart’s big and strong and you handle yourself like a queen. And that’s what I…that’s what I love about you.”

A current ran through Dee at his words, delivered in a low voice full of the passion Sebastian was sometimes capable of.

He rubbed her cheek with his thumb and she sighed. “Baby, can you take me to Lanisha’s?”

“Of course. Or you could come back to mines. I could drag us a mattress out of the barn…Scrape the mildew off…”

Dee laughed and he drove her back to Grace Hill where they parted ways for real. She watched him drive away looking out from the porch.

“Dee, baby? Is that you?”

“I’m coming, Mrs. Jameson,” said Dee, watching the white Crown Vic vanish through the tall wild grass lining the road.
