“Look who it is,” the light skinned girl hissed in a not-so-quiet voice, clamping hard on Minnie’s wrist. Minnie turned halfway in her chair, and their eyes locked.

She’d dressed up for a Saturday night down the mountain. She wore some flowy, silky blue thing that would slide through his hands like smoke. Her hair was loose, curling right around her heart-shaped face. She wore a little dash of black around her eyes, and the beauty mark was still there, a tiny fairy button.

“Hi, my name is Chrissie,” said the light skinned girl in a friendly voice, ignoring Minnie’s deer-in-headlights look. “You must be Rebel.”

Rebel frowned, recognizing the girl. “You went to Florin High, didn’t you?”

“Uh huh. I was a cheerleader. Go Buffaloes.” She pumped her fist, then tilted her head. “Weren’t you the tight end for a year?”

“Yeah.”

Rebel remembered Chrissie now. One of the more popular girls, always laughing. Minnie was her friend?

“Minnie says you didn’t remember her from school,” said Chrissie. “But now you know each other, don’t you?” Chrissie jumped suddenly in her chair. “Ow, Minnie!” She glared at the smaller woman, who looked ready to bolt. “So anyways, what are you doing here, Rebel?”

Rain finally appeared, striding through the swinging bar doors. “Rebel, what the…Oh, hello.” His eyes fell on Chrissie and Minnie. Chrissie suddenly looked like a child eyeing a piece of forbidden candy. “Oh my goodness. Is that his brother?” She said to Minnie in a loud whisper.

“Yes.”

“Is that the one who—“

“No,” said Minnie. “Shut up.”

Rebel introduced his brother to the ladies.

“How come I don’t know you?” Chrissie said, doing the math in her head. “I know Rebel from school, but not Rain.”

“I dropped out even before Rebel did,” said Rain.

“You dropped out of school? Both of you?” Minnie said,

“I got my GED,” Rebel was quick to say. He was embarrassed to admit how much he struggled at completing that thing with no Katie around to read the questions out loud. Minnie probably thought he was dumb as a box of nails.

“I’ll be damned,” said Rain, staring at Chrissie. “You got the biggest eyes I ever seen. That color real?”

“Real as life," said Chrissie, smiling flirtatiously. She was pretty, Rebel thought, but he preferred Minnie’s doll-like features to the sharp lines of Chrissie, who was probably mixed race. “Why don’t you boys sit down?” Chrissie said sweetly. “Since Rebel took all that effort to come say hi.”

“Let us treat you,” said Rebel automatically. “Get whatever you want.”

Rain fell into the seat next to Chrissie. Rebel had no choice but to take the seat next to Minnie, who began nervously folding her napkin.

“Hi,” he said.

Minnie replied in a strained voice, “How are you, Rebel?”

“Better than I was ten minutes ago.” He watched her. She couldn’t have looked more uncomfortable if she was sitting on tacks. His fist clenched against his thigh.

Maybe he’d been wrong about her feelings for him. But nothing felt wrong about this. Just sitting next to her. Everything about her was all soft and subtle, from the brown hues of her skin, hair and eyes to the smell of her soap.
