We had finally been blessed with a warm day as spring began to settle in, and I spent the morning in the newly landscaped gardens that bloomed along the inner courtyard of the castle. Although Ivona and Catina followed behind, I had distanced myself as I was not in a mood to talk to anyone. My motherâs condition had shocked me when I saw her earlier, and I wanted to be alone with my thoughts.
I heard the thundering beats of horseâs hooves as they came closer to the gates of the outer wall. I saw a messenger rein in his horse to address the two guards at their post. They spoke briefly, and he was waved through. I did not think much of it until I saw him galloping towards me in the courtyard.
âYour Highness!â he called breathlessly, waving something at me. âA letter for you, from the Prince.â
I immediately recognized the wax seal on the letter that showed the Princeâs coat of arms. I tore if from the guard and slid my hand under the seal and popped the letter open.
My Lady,
I hope this letter reaches you in good health. I write to tell you that I have had great success with banishing the Saxons from their village in Brasov. They were met with tremendous force, and my army remains intact. Praise God. My men are strong and will stop at nothing to rid Transylvania entirely of these greedy people who have dared test me.
Rest assured that I am well and hope to return to you soon.
Your Husband,
Vlad
I ran to the edge of the curtain wall that overlooked Transylvania. It all made sense to me now. I understood why my husband had sent my mother to me. He was planning to attack the nearby village of Brasov, and he knew that her own village of Sirnea would not be out of harm's way.
As I looked down, I felt a wave of nausea come over me. Sirnea, a small village on the outskirts of Brasov, had been my home. I feared that its proximity to Brasov would leave it in possible ruin. And while this saddened me, I also understood that it was my husbandâs duty to protect his people, even if it meant that their villages could be affected. He had been adamant about ridding Wallachia of the Saxons, and his plan all along for Poenari Castle was to position himself where he could keep watch over the city. A sense of pride for my husbandâs bravery filled me as I stared down at the village. He had put his politics aside if only briefly to see that my mother was out of harmâs way before he unleashed utter devastation over the neighboring village.
