Outside, Frank felt like he could breathe better. He hadn’t realized how suffocating the air had been inside the restaurant. The FBI guy didn’t follow them, but Frank thought he was trying too hard to ignore them. Everyone else in the joint had followed their movements as they exited. The FBI agent still sat at the bar stool. His back to them.

“What do we do now?” Caroline asked.

“Maybe we don’t do anything,” John said. “We’ve all been trying so hard to remember, but maybe we just do something that doesn’t require any thinking. We have fun.”

“Fun? With all that’s happened? Eleanor dying? Teddy still missing? Do you think he’d have fun if it was one of us? Do you think Eleanor would just forget about us so quickly?” Caroline said. Her voice broke and she started crying softly.

“No one’s forgetting Eleanor. I miss her, too,” John said, as he put his hand on her shoulder. “Fun was the wrong word, I meant—”

“A distraction,” Bunny said. “I get it.”

“There’s a movie at the drive-in,” John said. “A new Western.”

“Yeah, I need to escape from my head for a few hours. I think we all probably do, right?” Bunny asked, looking at Caroline.

She gave a sad, slow nod.
