The town’s nightlife is mainly confined to eating and drinking. The Pier Hotel, Quay St, T01478-612094, by the harbour, is a real fishermen’s drinking den; the refurbished Royal Hotel, Bank St, T01478-612525, is also popular; for reasonable bar food (££) until 1000, and a younger crowd, head just past the square to the Isles Inn at the end of Wentworth St.

There are few pleasures in life equal to sitting outside this venerable old pub with a pint of ale from the local Isle of Skye brewery and tucking into an excellent pub supper while watching a Hebridean sunset. On less clement evenings the old peat-burning fire inside provides an alternative feel-good factor.
