“Why don’t you marry me?”

She looked at me and smiled. Sometimes her eyes looked so luscious, so ethereal, so otherworldly. Contrasted with the way they almost appeared sad. This combination made Jennifer such an enigma. What rested beneath those eyes, that slight smile on full lips I loved to kiss?

“You’re crazy,” she replied.

“I know.”

“Are you proposing?” she asked. “I don’t see a ring.”

“You really need a ring?”

“You bet. And a big mansion. And some glorious huge spectacle of a wedding.”

“You got it,” I said. “Then what?”

We stopped walking and she slid her arm around my back and tugged me close to her. She kissed me. The crowd passing by on the lake’s shore, the joggers and walkers and bikers and roller bladers, all disappeared. None of them mattered. Some probably watched us lock in an embrace. But Jennifer didn’t care about the rest of the world. And that was one reason why I loved her so.

Oh to have a moment like that back.
