And this ‘emotional partnership’ can, of course, work the other way round. For example, someone snaps at a new junior at work and on the way home starts feeling guilty. They become so anxious about repeating their unprovoked irritable behaviour that they become uncomfortably patronising to all junior staff and don’t give them the negative feedback they need.

In this short section, I cannot deal in any depth with management of all the difficult emotions related to guilt, so I have chosen to focus on dealing with the stress response and a few simple strategies to help you control your fear and anger. There is also one for shameful guilt on here.

Three quick fixes for turning off your stress response

The sooner you learn and practise these quick fixes the better. Don’t put off doing this until you feel the tension and other uncomfortable feelings of the stress response. It will be almost impossible to learn a new technique then. If you develop the habit of using at least one of them daily, this will keep you in good mental and physical shape and more able to face any challenge that should come your way. They all ensure that your heart and brain are working as efficiently as they are able.
