Rafe, hands tucked in his tuxedo pant pockets, waited in the hotel lobby for Dia to join him. He wished he had his harmonica to toy with and calm his nerves.

Dia arrived, wearing a shimmering champagne dress and looking good enough to drink. The silky material draped lovingly over her curves. With an elegant plunging v-neck and simple shoulder straps, it revealed copious amounts of her mouth, dark honey skin. He wanted to run his lips along every exposed surface of her body. She wore light make up accentuating her cheekbones, eyes and long lashes. Parts of his body chastised him for not seizing her offer to sleep together, but he’d meant what he said about casual not being an option.

Jackson, playing the role of chauffeur and back-up, waited outside in their rented car for the evening.

Rafe held out an elbow for her. “You are exquisite.”

“And you’re quite handsome in that tux.” She slipped her arm through and walked with him.

He’d thought she had liked it by the way her eyes had widened when she’d seen him, but the compliment was nice to hear. When they arrived at the car, Rafe held open the door for Dia.

“A Cadillac? Seriously?” he said to Jackson.

The man grinned. “I thought it poetic. Dia, you look lovely.”

“Thank you.”

Rafe sat in the back beside Dia. He pulled out the discrete earpieces they would use for communication for tonight from their respective cases and pocketed them. And surely a man in his position, catering to so many unscrupulous clients, would have security for a house party.

Dia adjusted her dress strap with a slight annoyance to her demeanor. “I understand the attire, but I don’t like wearing dresses on missions.”

“Why is that?” Rafe asked, unable to see a downside when she looked so stunning.

“There’s no place to put my nunchaku. If something goes awry, all I have is a small, weighted, ceramic knife. It’ll pass metal detectors, but it’s not much of a weapon.”

Rafe’s mouth dropped open. “You use nunchucks?”

“They are extremely useful in a fight. You’d be surprised how difficult it is for even seasoned fighters to anticipate a blow from the wooden ends because you can swing it so fast.”

Nunchucks. Well, damn, that was a sight he wanted to see. Dia wielding nunchucks. He might have just found true love.

Jackson drove them to Shoup’s house, where he dropped them off in front of the mansion in East Winnetka along an enormous circle drive. The exterior was tan brick and limestone with a slate roof, giving it a timeless look. The front lawn was painstakingly manicured, including a dozen perfectly rounded holly shrubs in front of the house.

Rafe had memorized the interior layout—six bedrooms, six and a half baths, three fireplaces. The spectacular kitchen had top of the line appliances, including two Sub-Zero refrigerators, a luxury Wolf range, and an espresso/cappuccino machine. The
