CHAPTER 9

We made it back to the house with Malachi behind the wheel of my car, which had been parked five blocks away from the apartment complex. I sat in the living room of his home and watched him as he anxiously paced the room and tried to decide what to do. His cell phone was clutched in his hand so tightly that his knuckles had lost their color. He was mumbling about calling Demetrius, but he wasn’t sure if that was smart, considering that my condition was still so uncontrolled.

“Are you going to call him?” A tall brute of a man spoke from the corner. He had been watching me like a hawk from the moment we returned to the house. He, like the rest of the males who had conveniently decided to come out of hiding, didn’t trust me not to make a run for it. Maurice was a tall, dark skinned male, and as imposing as his form was, he had the sad stench of a beta male. He was simply secondary. Compared to Malachi, Maurice was unimpressive and the thought of him touching my body actually turned my stomach. As much as it sickened me, I pulled in his scent because it helped to deter me from becoming aroused as I watched Malachi’s strong legs carry him back and forth across the floor in front of me. I would have sworn he was trying to tease me when he stopped and wrapped his hands around his dreads that were pulled back; he released them from the holder and allowed them to fall down around his shoulders. I took a big whiff of Maurice and held it in as long as I could.

“I don’t know, I probably should, but is it worth the risk? We have no proof that we have actually been compromised.” Malachi looked conflicted, as if he couldn’t bring himself to fully believe his own words.

“We haven’t yet, but you know damn well that the covens will investigate what happened back there and that will lead them right to us. That shit is already all over the news! How long do you think it will take them to connect the dots?” Maurice was upset, but he seemed to me to be overly aggressive for the situation. He looked like he was ready to go to war. Everyone was upset and on edge, but there was something about him in particular that was just completely over the top. I wasn’t sure about my intuition, but he actually looked guilty, like there was something he was hiding from Malachi. What could he have to feel guilty about? I was the one who had fucked up. Maybe he knew I had left and chose not to say anything about it. Regardless of what it was, he needed to chill out. I watched him as he moved a step closer to Malachi and I growled a low warning. I didn’t trust his ass and something in me wanted to protect Malachi from him.
