Chapter 15

Bax watched Willow running toward and Cass did his best to remember he loved his brother. Most of the time, at least. When he wasn’t being deuced annoying. Bax had been making progress with Lady Willow. She’d admitted to enjoying his touch, his kiss, and she might have let him kiss her again. Had Cass not appeared like a bad omen.

Now, she had no thought for Bax’s kisses. She kept her steps and gaze trained on her goal—Cass looking dashing, damn him, at the end of Rotten Row.

Bax jogged to catch up with her, noticing the closer he got to the scene at the end of Rotten Row, that Cass was not the only rider present.

“Is that Lord Belton?” Willow asked, stopping and waiting as Bax approached. “He’s a notorious rake.”

Bax reached her and they headed toward the strip of dirt where the horses snorted and stamped, waiting to let loose. “And Cass’s bosom friend. They rake it up together, I’m afraid.”

“You disapprove,” she sighed, turning her eyes toward the two equestrian rogues. “Of course, you disapprove.”

“What will they gain by racing? Especially at this late hour? He pulled a watch from his waistcoat. “It’s too near the fashionable hour.”

Willow peered at the watch face, her eyes dancing. “How exciting! A race!” They were close to the riders now, and she pulled away from him to join them, but he kept her arm pinned to his side.

“Don’t get underfoot.”

“I’m not going to let a horse trample me!” she snorted, offended. “You are so …”

“Yes? What am I?”

“High-handed.”

“Am not!”

She nodded. “Controlling.”

“Not so!”

Both of her eyebrows flew up. “The day I set out to get socks, and we met on the street, you steered me back home before I even knew your true identity, which is another way you controlled the situation, by the way—withholding who you are. Then, of course, you procured and paid for the socks before including me when it was my idea to begin with. And with those things you cannot control—your brother’s actions, who I marry—you are decisively disapproving.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m not controlling. I just know better ways of doing things. And I share my knowledge with others, help them do things … better.”

“No.” She shook her head slowly. “You’re just like every other man. Just like m—”

“Do not compare me to your father, Lady Willow.” He kept his tone calm, but could not keep the knife’s edge out of it. He’d thought they’d made progress, but here they were once more. It was difficult to control his frustration.

She stumbled back one, two, three steps, her flushed face growing redder. Her arms stiffened at her sides, and her hands clenched into her skirts, fear writ over every inch of her body.

He uncrossed his arms and held his hands up, palms flat. He backed away, giving her space. He shoved shaking fingers through his hair, smoothing it and his racing emotions. “I am a man and feel anger. Perhaps you are right, and I am controlling, high-handed, but that does not mean I seek to hurt you.
