“So everything worked out?” Mateo sat in the plush chair in front of Mercedes’s desk with a small, contented smile on his face. She took in his new silk shirt, the elegant suit, and noted how much happier he looked, even though his natural reserve prevented him from simply beaming at her.
“Yes,” he said, a frown momentarily darkening his broad, tanned forehead. “Well, in the end, yes.”
“Oh,” Mercy said, grinning. “You thought I meant Gretchen? No, not at all.” She winked. “I meant the bartender.”
“Ah,” Mateo said, looking surprised. “So you knew...?”
“Knew?” Mercy snorted. “That was the whole set-up. There’s no way I could’ve gotten you to agree to a date with Meridiana before, well, you did.” He shrugged, laughing quietly, and nodded.
“I can’t thank you enough,” he said finally. “You...You have made my life infinitely better.” His fingers tugged on the length of silver chain he now wore around his wrist, and when he saw her notice it, Mateo grinned openly. “I should be going. My Mi--Meridiana will be missing me.”
“Indeed,” Mercy said, smoothing the envelope with his payment on her desk. “A pleasure doing business with you.” To her utter shock, the elegant knight reached over her desk, grasped her wrist and gave her a single kiss on the back of her hand. His lips were warm and soft, and even though it was only gratitude she saw in his eyes, Mercedes couldn’t help but swoon a little under his dark, steady gaze.
“I can never thank you enough, he told her again, and let go of her hand.” She blushed, and he walked out of her office, happy to return to the eternal beckon of his lady. Mercy needed a minute to fan herself before she could call her cousin and let her know how it went.
“Well, your fine tracking skills have resulted in yet another happy pair,” she said. “Tell Ruth that old lady costume clearly did the trick, too.” She paused, listening to Charity’s full report, and then laughed out loud. “Really? She was going to come and see me the next week?” Mercy rolled her eyes, then laughed good naturedly. “We did miss out on that commission, yes...But something tells me having a succubus on your good side is worth it--who knows, I might have actually thought the best we could do was set him up with a genteel old lady, if you weren’t so good at your job.” Thanking her cousin once more, Mercy hung up the phone, still smiling.
All in a day’s work, she thought, and prepared to close up the office. Sometimes, being the world’s only match-maker for the time’s leftover gods, goddesses, ghouls and ghosties was really worth it. Sometimes, being Cupid spawn was pretty cool. Mercedes fingered the fat envelope Mateo had left and sighed. This time, it certainly was.
