CHAPTER 15

KIM

I wake to the sound of my phone vibrating against something hard, and flail around for a moment before I remember where I am: Justin’s house, sleeping on the couch. My neck is freakin’ killing me.

My hand gropes around on the coffee table beside the couch until my fingers brush against my phone case. Crushing my face into the seam between the couch cushions, I answer. “Hello?”

“Kim!” Elaine exclaims. “I have great news! Are you sitting down?”

“Basically,” I mutter. My mouth is so dry. I need water.

“I’m lining up an audition for you,” she says. “And it looks promising.”

I sit up so fast that I nearly topple off the couch. “What?”

“You’re going to love it,” she gushes.

“What kind of movie?” I ask. “Give me details!”

“Not yet,” Elaine says. “It’s a surprise. I want to make sure it’s a done deal before I get your hopes up.”

Too late—I’m already electric with excitement. I disentangle myself from the plaid blanket Justin lent me last night and sit up properly to stretch.

“What’s the timeline?” I ask. “Should I head back to LA today?” The thought of leaving is actually a disappointment. I’m not going to stay in Georgia over a crush, but I was hoping we’d have a few more days together.

“Not yet,” Elaine says. “I’ll let you know when. The paparazzi is still all over Grant, so lying low for another week won’t hurt.”

“I’ll take your word for it,” I say. Fortunately, she can’t see my smile.

“Have a good one!” Elaine chirps. “I’ll let you know more soon.”

The line goes dead, and I pull the phone away from my ear with a contented sigh. I should have known that Elaine wouldn’t leave me hanging long.

My groggy brain does the math of East Coast/West Coast time. Elaine definitely didn’t call me at three a.m. PST, but Justin said that he had to be up early with Mason…

I check the clock on my phone only to find that it’s almost nine. Did Justin leave me here?

Before I can get too worked up, Justin peeks his head around the door to the hall. “Hey, are you off the phone? I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“What are you still doing here?” I ask. “What about work?”

Justin shrugs. “I took Mason to school, but I called off today. We don’t have anything big planned, and I have a bunch of PTO saved up.”

The fact that he took the day off to be with me leaves me with a warm, fuzzy feeling that settles low in my belly. Elaine’s fixing things. I’m back on top of the world.

You should celebrate, my traitorous hormones scream. Spend the morning in bed and climb him like a tree.

I tamp down these thoughts and get up from the couch. “What do you want to do with your day off?” The words are barely out of my mouth before my stomach rumbles so loudly that Justin can hear it from across the room.

“Breakfast at the diner?” Justin suggests.

“Are you hoping to get a Reuben for breakfast?” I tease.
