CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Laura

“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay tonight?” my brother asked again, as he placed a glass of water on the table before me, sitting on the couch across from my chair. His eyes roamed my face for any sign of distress. “I don’t mind camping out here in your living room.”

He added. “I feel uneasy leaving you alone in your current condition.”

I cracked a smile at the worried look on his face. It was nice to have someone doting on me, but all I wanted now was some peace and quiet.

“I’m sure.” I took a sip from the glass. “Having you underfoot would drive me batty. As much as I love you, living with you is another thing. Your help tonight is touching, and I’m grateful. It’s nice having my big brother close by again.”

“Ok, I won’t stay the night, but let me make sure you have everything you need now. Are you hungry? Should I make you something to eat? Once you’re settled and tucked in to bed, I’ll go home. Thanks for the spare key. I’ll lock up on my way out,” he said in his non-negotiable tone.

“Fine. I’m too tired to argue. Plus, I’ve missed your cooking. Can you see if you have enough supplies in the kitchen to make dinner? Or we can order for delivery if you want?” I sighed, wondering when the painkillers would finally kick in.

“Which do you prefer?” Andre asked me to choose.

“If I have a choice and it’s possible, I’d prefer your cooking over takeout any day.”

“Are you sure you’re recalling my cooking skills correctly? I’ll see what I can scrounge up.” My brother headed for the kitchen but kept talking. I could still see him over the counter.

“In the hospital, Trey had you pumped up for a fight, and then you surprised me by backing down. I’ve never known you to back down from a fight.”

“I’ve changed from the erratic teen I was,” I informed him. “Growing up, I’ve had to learn to control my temper. At least most of the time. It’s still a work in progress. Trey had a right to be upset. You know, you threw me for a loop too, not telling me that this was Trey’s place.”

“I’m sorry, but I didn’t think it mattered.” He confessed. “What concerns me is Trey’s reaction to all of this. He was understandably upset that Greg could have been seriously hurt today, but he showed no concern for your wellbeing at all. That was seriously crazy, you risking your life like that. I mean, I would for Greg also, but still, that’s just crazy.”

“It’s my fault he’s mad at you. I’m sorry I asked you not to tell him when you wanted to. I don’t want you two to be at odds because of me.”

Andre sighed. “It’s a big mess right now, isn’t it? It sounds like you just got fired. And if we can’t find another place by the end of the week, you can stay at my place.
