CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Laura
âAre you sure you donât want me to stay tonight?â my brother asked again, as he placed a glass of water on the table before me, sitting on the couch across from my chair. His eyes roamed my face for any sign of distress. âI donât mind camping out here in your living room.â
He added. âI feel uneasy leaving you alone in your current condition.â
I cracked a smile at the worried look on his face. It was nice to have someone doting on me, but all I wanted now was some peace and quiet.
âIâm sure.â I took a sip from the glass. âHaving you underfoot would drive me batty. As much as I love you, living with you is another thing. Your help tonight is touching, and Iâm grateful. Itâs nice having my big brother close by again.â
âOk, I wonât stay the night, but let me make sure you have everything you need now. Are you hungry? Should I make you something to eat? Once youâre settled and tucked in to bed, Iâll go home. Thanks for the spare key. Iâll lock up on my way out,â he said in his non-negotiable tone.
âFine. Iâm too tired to argue. Plus, Iâve missed your cooking. Can you see if you have enough supplies in the kitchen to make dinner? Or we can order for delivery if you want?â I sighed, wondering when the painkillers would finally kick in.
âWhich do you prefer?â Andre asked me to choose.
âIf I have a choice and itâs possible, Iâd prefer your cooking over takeout any day.â
âAre you sure youâre recalling my cooking skills correctly? Iâll see what I can scrounge up.â My brother headed for the kitchen but kept talking. I could still see him over the counter.
âIn the hospital, Trey had you pumped up for a fight, and then you surprised me by backing down. Iâve never known you to back down from a fight.â
âIâve changed from the erratic teen I was,â I informed him. âGrowing up, Iâve had to learn to control my temper. At least most of the time. Itâs still a work in progress. Trey had a right to be upset. You know, you threw me for a loop too, not telling me that this was Treyâs place.â
âIâm sorry, but I didnât think it mattered.â He confessed. âWhat concerns me is Treyâs reaction to all of this. He was understandably upset that Greg could have been seriously hurt today, but he showed no concern for your wellbeing at all. That was seriously crazy, you risking your life like that. I mean, I would for Greg also, but still, thatâs just crazy.â
âItâs my fault heâs mad at you. Iâm sorry I asked you not to tell him when you wanted to. I donât want you two to be at odds because of me.â
Andre sighed. âItâs a big mess right now, isnât it? It sounds like you just got fired. And if we canât find another place by the end of the week, you can stay at my place.
