Upon entering the house they could hear happy sounds coming from the backyard. Missy was in the rope swing with Gina, and both girls were giggling as their brother pushed them higher.
Suddenly Missyâs eyes went to the porch and she cried, âUnca Quint Daddy is home!â
When the other two looked that direction, Quint called, âAlex, Gina, Missy, thereâs someone here I want you to meet. The Lord has answered our prayers!â
Alex stopped the swing and the girls hopped out. All three ran to the porch and bounded up the stairs, looking back and forth between their adoptive father and the round-faced woman.
âChildren,â Quint said, âI want you to meet Mabel Ritter. Sheâs our new live-in housekeeper.â
Mabel smiled and said, âAnd I already know your names. Youâre Alex, youâre Gina, and you are Missy.â
Gina and Missy curtsied, telling Mabel they were very happy to meet her. Alex did his French gentlemanâs bow, saying the same.
âAnd Iâm very happy to meet all three of you,â Mabel said.
Gina moved toward Mabel, opening her arms to embrace her. But Mabel frowned and took a half-step back. Gina bit down on her lower lip but said nothing.
âWell, kids,â Quint said, âletâs take Mrs. Ritter upstairs and let her see her room. I told her what was available, and she wants the room with the one bed.â
Gina stepped up and offered her hand. âYouâll like the room, Mrs. Ritter. Come on.â
Mabel took the hand hesitantly, then smiled and said, âDr. Roberts, I would be more comfortable if you and the children would call me by my first name rather than Mrs. Ritter.â
âFine. Mabel it is. Since she has requested this, children, you can call her by that name too.â
Seeing that Mabel had taken Ginaâs hand, Missy offered her own hand, and Mabel took it without hesitation. They led her through the door and toward the staircase with Alex and Quint following.
When they entered the room, Mabel was astonished at how large and lovely it was. âDoctor, this will do nicely. Itâs beautiful.â
âIâm glad you like it,â said Quint, placing her overnight bag on the bed. âWell, kids, weâd better give Mabel some time to herself so she can get settled in her room.â
Mabel moved to the bed and laid her hand on the overnight bag. âIâll come downstairs as soon as I unpack my bag, Doctor. Maybe Gina will show me around in the kitchen so I can get acquainted with it.â
âIâll be glad to help you cook the meals, maâam,â said Gina.
âThat will be fine,â said Mabel.
âIs there anything else we can do for you right now?â Quint asked.
âNot that I can think of, Doctor.â
âAll right. See you in a little while.â
Mabel watched the door close behind them and chuckled to herself. In a whisper, she said, âYou did all right for yourself, olâ girl. Thereâll be a lot of work here, but as the doctor said, the older two will help. And just look at this room! Sure makes that boardinghouse room look shabby. Youâve never had anything as nice as this, or even close.
