Harley was nervous as all get out that Winter wouldn’t understand his presents. He’d found a copy of his favorite book, Territory, and then he’d found some fancy makeup brushes that the lady at the store had said were special and all, so—

God, he wanted Winter to like them.

“Home sweet home.” Winter opened the door and gestured for him to go inside. “Would you like a cup of coffee? I think I’m still too full for cake yet, so can we start with presents?”

“We can! You go sit, and I’ll bring them to you, okay?” Harley was buzzing. Just seriously buzzing, nervous that he’d chosen wrong.

“All right.” Winter went and took a seat in his favorite chair, kicked off his shoes, and put his feet up. “I can’t wait to open them.”

“I can’t wait for you to open them too. Either. Whatever. God, I’m excited.” He brought both the packages over, sitting close by on the ottoman.

“They’re wrapped so nicely. Which one first?” Winter reached for them, hovering his fingers over one and then the other and back again. “Does it matter?”

“Open this one first.” Harley handed over the book.

“Very well.” Winter took it and smiled as he started to open it, carefully popping open the tape on the ends and obviously trying not to tear the paper. “Oh, it feels like a book. It is! Oh…wonderful! I haven’t had the opportunity to check it out yet. This is lovely. Thank you.” Winter flipped to the back jacket and read it, then opened the book and flipped through a couple of pages. “I can’t wait to read it.”

“It’s my favorite, so I thought I could share it.” There was something intimate about sharing favorite books. It said things about your soul.

“I appreciate this very much. I think reading someone else’s favorite book tells you so much about them, don’t you?” Winter put the book down and picked up his other gift. “I can’t even guess at this one.”

“I hope you like it.” He prayed he hadn’t made a crazy misstep. It was sort of…personal.

Winter opened the wrapping as carefully as the book. “Oh.” Winter flipped the box over in his fingers slowly, then opened up one end and pulled out the brushes, one by one. “Oh, my. Harley, these are beautiful. One for liner, blush and…the shadow brush is amazing. They’re so elegant.” Winter ran his fingers over the bristles and tried out the blush brush on his cheek. “They feel nice too. I just adore them.”

His heart was pounding, and his cheeks felt like they were on fire. “Happy birthday!”

“It is, very happy. Such thoughtful gifts. I can’t wait to use the brushes on your handsome face. Shall we go to the club tomorrow? I could make you up before we go. I would enjoy that very much.”

“You can. I’m so glad you like them. The person at the store said they were nice ones.” He didn’t know much, but he could see that Winter was truly pleased.

“They are. They’re special, like the man who bought them for me.
