Chapter Nineteen

“Are you sure it’s okay if I go?” Cassie asked Jess for the fifth time.

While they had been on their own for a week, Cassie still had bouts of worry when it came to leaving Jess alone. Cassie knew they were unfounded worries, but leaving her sister alone in the evening hours, reignited old, irrational childhood fears - Brothers Grimm type fears of dark forests, dangerous witches and lurking threats.

The only distraction she had from her ridiculous fears was the anticipation of seeing Stills again. She couldn’t wait to be in his arms. Couldn’t wait for his heat to encompass her and for the crescendo of all the virtual flirting she’d gone through to materialize. Just wondering when they might get to explore more intimate facets of their need for each other, sent a thrill up and down her spine.

“I can cancel…” Cassie lied.

“No. Go. We need a break from each other,” Jess assured Cassie for the fifth time. “I’ve got a pizza coming. I’ve slept without a night-light for two nights in a row and when someone knocks on the door now, I don’t jump.”

Cassie studied her sister, really studied her. She was looking and acting a lot more like herself again. “If you’re sure.”

“I’m sure. I’ve got my chick flick attire on.” She gestured to her yoga pants and oversized ‘I love LA’ t-shirt.

“Very chic.”

“I have three movies lined up for my pizza date. Now go have fun with Mr. Mystery Man.” Jessica waved her off.

Cassie almost told Jess she was going out with Stills, but changed her mind. Not yet. She also wasn’t sure how to explain the natural, seamless progression of their attraction to each other. How in one moment they were just two strangers, but with each interaction, slowly and smoothly, without any pretense or stress or shock, their attraction grew.

She rolled her eyes at her thoughts. That’s how you’d describe it. So if she wanted to, she could explain it. She just didn’t want to.

Tonight, she was anxiously excited for this very natural step of seeing where dating would take them.

“Okay, have a good night,” Cassie said. She stopped at the mirror by the front door; leaned close to make sure her mascara hadn’t clumped or left gritty residue and then ran her fingers through her shoulder length hair. Finally she stepped back to make sure her cotton, knee-length, sleeveless black dress hung just right.

Jess appeared behind her in the mirror. “This guy must be something.”

Cassie bit her lip.

“Just tell me who it is?” Jessica pleaded.

“I’ll tell you later.”

“Why?”

“It’s just a date, Jess. It might not work out.”

“Then why are you so nervous?”

“I’m not nervous,” Cassie lied.

“Fine. Don’t tell me.”

“I won’t.”

Jess smiled and pushed a strand of hair back from Cassie’s face. Cassie pulled away from her and Jess laughed, then reassured her sister. “You look great.”

“Okay.” Cassie made sure her phone and keys were in her purse, then folded a lightweight, white sweater over her arm and turned toward Jess. “So…okay?”

Jess rolled her eyes, took Cassie by the arm, opened the door and propelled her out.
