Chapter 16

Parker

I flipped another page, glancing at the clock on my desk for only the briefest of seconds before diving back into the story.

I should be working. I had a mountain of paperwork to get through, a few dozen orders to go over for next month, and checks for Gram’s seventy-fifth birthday party to write. The party was this weekend and it still felt like there was so much to do. However, I couldn’t stop reading, at least, not until I got to the end of this chapter.

Or maybe the next.

Or maybe I would just finish the book.

I was nearing the end.

I said a quick prayer for one more happy, make-up sex scene. God, they were my favorite. Maggie was a freaking goddess when it came to describing pleasure, which didn’t surprise me in the least after she had me rock hard detailing a single kiss over the phone.

I was quickly becoming addicted to her words.

I hadn’t been lying to her when I said I liked her books. She was beyond talented and they were far from what I thought when it came to romance novels. I could do without the grand declarations and unrealistic scenarios—as if an extremely famous rockstar would drive himself to his own concert and stop along the way to help a stranded woman change her tire, not caring that he was late for his sold out show—but beyond that, I loved every page. The characters had depth, each one somehow staying true to its own voice even though Maggie was behind each of them, and the writing was creative and funny.

I wanted to punch myself in the dick when she brought up what I had said four years ago. I didn’t doubt for a moment that she remembered the situation accurately. It sounds exactly like something a cynical asshole like me would say. Dark place or not, the version of me she met four years ago was an ass.

Hell, me from four weeks ago was an ass.

I didn’t want to give Maggie too much credit, but her presence in my life had changed me in some small ways. I definitely wouldn’t be tearing through pages of a romance novel before her, ignoring work and all other responsibilities.

Flipping a page, I let out a groan. It just went on and on. I needed to know what Jet did after Harper took off in a cab, and right now he was getting shit faced in his hotel room, writing some sappy song about love. I knew it was just filler. They had to get back together within the next few pages. This was Maggie’s book after all.

Jet wouldn’t just give up.

Knowing that made it hard hard not to skip through all this in between bullshit.

“Parker?” Jasper's voice came from the other side of my door moments before it opened. “You busy—Ooow, you really are reading them?” His face lit up like a school boy.

When Jasper had learned I was reading Maggie’s books, he had eagerly jumped on the bandwagon, delighting Gram and starting what might possibly be a romance addition.
