Jon and Katie raced to his SUV and tore out of Pali Maui, leaving skid marks on the pavement. Jon muttered a curse under his breath and reached for Katieâs hand. Her eyes filled and her heart pounded. âCan you drive faster?â
When they were a few miles from their house, Katie suddenly remembered Noelle was at daycare. Would she be able to pick her up on time? âIâd better text Willa and have her pick up Noelle.â
Jon agreed that was a good idea. âYeah, donât tell her anything else. Not yet.â
Minutes later, they were forced to pull to the side of the road as sirens behind their vehicle blared. Two large firetrucks raced by. Immediately after, Jon pulled back out onto the road and gunned the engine.
âJon, hurry!â Katie urged.
Her husband drilled her with a look, angry that she had the nerve to push him to go faster when, clearly, he was already speeding.
As they passed the supermarket where she typically purchased her groceries, memories formed.
The down payment for their house in Wailuku was a gift from her parents. On closing day, her mom had surprised them with a yard filled with garish plastic flamingoes and a sign that said Welcome Home.
She could recall walking up the sidewalk with a tiny bundle in her arms, fresh from the hospital, twice. And the bedroom upstairs where theyâd made those babies. The living room flashed in her mind where Jon spent long nights assembling Barbie houses for under the tree on Christmas morning. She could see herself in the kitchen baking brownies for Girl Scouts and saw the shower where she and Jon spent time in order to get some privacy. Heâd tease her that too much noise might wake their girls.
Tears welled in her eyes. Their family photos. Jonâs prized cookbooks. Their entire life was in that house.
Jon turned onto their street. From there, they could see flames. Katieâs hand flew to her chest. âOh, Jon.â
As they neared, Katie spotted some of Aidenâs team from Maui Emergency Management Administration. On the island, each township had its own fire department. MEMA members still showed up and offered assistance.
Jon barely parked before Katie flung her door open and scrambled from the car. She raced toward their yard and was immediately stopped by a girl with a tiger tattoo on her arm. âIâm sorry. You canât go any closer. Itâs too dangerous.â
Katie wanted desperately to wiggle free of the girlâs hold on her arm. It was her house and it was on fire. Jon stood behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders. âItâs on fire,â he muttered, not believing what he was seeing.
Of course, it was on fire. The flames and the acrid smell of smoke testified to that. She reached for one of his hands and squeezed, feeling her throat swell with emotion. She could barely breathe.
A car rushed up and screeched to a halt. Out climbed her mother. She circled the front of her car and helped Aiden from the passenger side and together, they rushed over.
