CHAPTER 29

Jim Lattimore snubbed his now unlit cigar in the ashtray on the corner of his desk. He leaned back in his chair and stared across the office at Reggie, who was talking to a customer on the telephone. Lattimore observed the big smile on Reggie’s face. He had heard the buzz around the office from the employees who reported to him that Reggie was doing a fantastic job. He picked up his wrist strengthener and squeezed it repeatedly while clenching his teeth and thought to himself, I didn’t think that little son of a bitch would last this long. He doesn’t belong here, and I’m getting tired of looking at that smiling face.

He observed Reggie a little longer and then squeezed one last time on his wrist strengthener. He sat up in his chair, smiled, and thought to himself, Well, what’s a supervisor to do?

Lattimore then yelled across the office, “Hey, Saunders, get over here!”

Reggie, along with several other coworkers, heard him. His fellow coworkers hunkered down because they all knew that when Lattimore yelled, nothing good was going to happen. Everyone was well aware that Lattimore ran the office, and people didn’t make a move without consulting with him. He stood a little over six feet, and he relished intimidating employees. Plus, he always walked around with a stubbed-out cigar in his mouth for effect.

Reggie slowly got up from his chair and started walking across the massive office in the direction of Lattimore, observing heads bowing down to avoid eye contact as he passed each employee’s desk. He wondered to himself, What now? Up until now, he thought he had done a good job of avoiding Lattimore. He kept his nose to the grindstone and just did his job.

As he stood in front of Lattimore’s desk, he felt his heart pounding as if it were going to jump out of his chest, but he managed to control his breath and politely said, “Did you want to speak to me, sir?”

Lattimore looked up at Reggie, smiled, and threw a little black book across his desk. “Here, hotshot. Let’s see what you are really made of.”

Reggie picked up the book and flipped through the pages. There were only five pages. He noted that each page was a collection assignment of a customer that was past due . . . way past due.

Lattimore was enjoying the expression on Reggie’s face. He added, “You’ve got until month’s end to get these assignments cleared.” Lattimore stood up and leveraged his height advantage. He leaned over and whispered into Reggie’s ear, “You’ve got a company car so I don’t want to see your little smiling face back in the office until it’s done. Any questions?”

For a moment, Reggie was speechless and thought, What the fuck? These are the five worst collection assignments in the office and in the worst neighborhoods.

He had been working there long enough to know that none of the other collectors ever left the office to even try to collect from these customers in person.
