CHAPTER ELEVEN

February 1, 8:45 a.m.

Doris McCallister sat impatiently in her makeup chair, her fingers drumming endlessly on the armrest. She hated many things — too many, in fact — but waiting was perhaps the most prevalent among them. It simply sapped her strength.

The young woman who had been attending her lifted her pad once more to apply some more skin tone to her cheek, but McCallister shrugged it off. Looking into the mirror, she checked her profile, first right, then left. She looked fine.

"That's enough," she told the startled cosmetic technician. The woman started to protest and stopped. She had heard enough about McCallister to know what to expect, and crossing her was not something to be done lightly. Still, it was her job to make sure the speakers looked their best and most presentable, and if the camera detected a flaw that drew a complaint later, she knew all the explanations in the world would not be enough to protect her from the producer's wrath.

"Are you sure you don't want just a little — "

McCallister rolled her eyes and groaned. Here she was about to go into the studio and join half a dozen of the nation's most prominent journalists and commentators, and this little girl was troubling her about making sure her appearance was similar to that of some Hollywood model she had probably seen in one of her teenybopper fashion magazines. McCallister shook her head. The little one would learn in time. For now, however, she would learn something right away for her own good..

"I said, that's fine," she barked, rising from her chair and throwing the towel that had been draped across her shoulders on the floor. The woman started to try and pick it up and then stopped. Dawson turned her face back and forth in the mirror, double-checking herself one last time. She was fine. Picking up her purse, she wheeled about and stormed through the doorway, leaving the young technician behind.

"You're welcome," the technician whispered softly. She looked down at the floor and wondered briefly if she had done the right thing. It was only her fourth month on the job, and unlike McCallister and the others whose faces she painstakingly attempted to beautify every day, she knew full well that her job meant the difference between having a roof over her head or spending the nights on the streets. At times she honestly wondered what made the rich think they were better than the rest — every one she worked on was the same: thankless, thoughtless, and all too many times far too clueless. It was enough to make her cry, but she had already decided long ago never to give those she served that satisfaction. Turning back to her kit, she began to hum a tune as she replaced her brushes and pads. She would know soon enough if she had erred.

McCallister entered the studio and sat down, hooking her microphone into her suit immediately as she scanned the others at the table.
