The room rustled with confusion as everyone processed Morgan’s words. My eyes darted between the two boys’ faces. I hadn’t seen it at first, maybe because in all the confusion I hadn’t looked closely enough at Chucky yet, but with them side by side, I felt like smacking myself in the forehead. Of course, they were brothers! This was the brother STAHP had been looking for.

Chucky pushed Morgan away, his hands flying.

“He’s asking who the other boy is,” Cyrus’s brother Joey said.

Morgan’s face fell, and I realized that of course Chucky hadn’t heard Morgan’s declaration. Morgan faced him directly and signed to him silently. Thankfully, Joey translated for us again.

“That’s… dinosaur, but his hand is curved—oh, like a C. Chucky dinosaur, Chucky’s sign name. He says… don’t you remember playing Dinosaur Train? You were always a T-Rex.”

Chucky’s eyes slowly widened, and then he tentatively made a sign, a fist with three fingers folded over his thumb, his other hand held down, index finger pointed out. He brought his fist down to his other hand.

“That’s brother with an M,” Joey said.

Morgan nodded enthusiastically, and Chucky lunged at him, wrapping his arms around the older boy. They were in their own little world, tears streaming now they’d been reunited. When I started sniffling, I couldn’t take it any longer. I ran to wrap my arms around both of them. I was quickly joined by Dean, then Cyrus, and then it just turned into a giant kitten pile—or puppy-cub-kitten pile.

A few moments later we broke apart. I couldn’t exactly see through my tears, but I doubted there was a dry eye in the place. I stayed kneeling by the boys, a hand on each of them. “Can you tell Chucky what I say?” I asked Morgan. He nodded.

I looked Chucky in the eyes. “We’ve been looking for you for a long time, pup. Your brother loves you very much. He didn’t want to leave you. But don’t worry. You’re going to be together from now on.”

I might not have the legal authority to make that statement, but I would fight anyone, STAHP, Alphabits, the government if I had to… I’d fight anyone if they tried to interfere with me keeping this promise.

Morgan’s hands shook as he finished signing, and then Chucky lunged at me for a hug, Morgan right behind him. These poor, dear boys. Life had been hard for them. They deserved to be just kids. They deserved a family. I was going to make sure they got that… no matter what.

Cyrus’s brother Vasily cleared his throat for attention, but it was Don Francis who spoke. “I do not wish to interrupt, but would someone mind explaining what is happening?”

Dean finished blowing his nose and said, “Why don’t I take the kids out into the yard to play while everyone talks?”

“I want to stay,” Nate declared, chin lifted defiantly.

I looked to Cyrus who shrugged. “The boy has seen how rough the world is. This won’t be new to him.”

“If he’s staying, I’m staying,” Jodie chimed in, arms crossed over her chest.
