Chapter 13

“I know this is difficult for you and the girls, Ms. Moreno. We’ll try to get through this interview as quickly as we can.”

As Luke spoke with the Alpha Gam’s house mother, his deep voice oozing with compassion, Penny sat upon the nearest love seat and sipped her coffee quietly. She was here to observe, not ask questions.

For the first time, she could see why Luke was good at his job. Right now, he was in his element. Flirtatious? Not at all. It seemed he’d taken her words to heart.

For the moment, at least.

Ellie swept her dark hair from her forehead. “Thank you. The last few days have been tough.” Footsteps intermingled with giggles as the back door slammed. Wrinkling her nose Ellie waved a hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about the girls. They’re heading to their rooms. I asked them to give us privacy.”

Placing her cup on the oversized coffee table, Penny looked around. The commons area was huge. Decorated with comfortable floral chaises and a few café-style tables, the room could easily be transformed into party central.

But she already knew that. Unfortunately, her early college years had been no different than high school.

One sorority party. That’s all it had taken for her to find her way onto the Alpha Gam’s do not invite list. Anthony Preston, AKA Jerkweed Extraordinaire, had asked her out after they’d paired up in Human Bio. Apparently, the hazing ritual for the Theta Tau fraternity was to bring a geek to a Greek party. It included humiliating said geek as part of the festivities. And somehow, he’d found her explicit video online.

But Penny had gotten the last laugh. All it had taken was her roommate’s extensive computer knowledge—ahem, hacking skills—to send a worm to Preston’s laptop, erasing all the lab data he’d acquired during the semester. He’d ended up on academic probation.

She smiled. Never mess with a geek.

The cushions bounced as Luke stirred next to her. “Thank you. I’ll turn it over to Detective Sutton.” He sat back and gave Penny a soft smile.

His arm slid back, brushing her hips as he shifted his weight, and she squirmed against the upholstery. With his thighs pressed intimately against hers, their past evaporated.

Jeez Louise, she’d be a hot mess by the time he left. He had infiltrated her space so many times the last week, her focus had slipped.

Forget about trying to ignore the man. His navy suit hugged his long, lean body, accentuating muscles he obviously still honed. Not to mention he smelled like leather and pine mixed with arrogant valor. It was sexy as sin. In fact, if she could bottle his scent, that’s what she’d name it.

She quickly glanced at his pants. She’d noticed his erection when they were outside—it wasn’t hard to miss. Her reaction had only exacerbated the problem. It was bad enough she dreamt of every naughty innuendo and scrap of attention she’d sought from him since she was a girl. Now, she was living it.

Jeez, I sound like a desperate teenage virgin.
