The lecture was a triumph, even though the only person present who was likely to understand it fully was Gauss. Riemann’s originality made a big impression on Gauss, who told Weber how surprised he was at its depth. The impulsive gamble had paid off.

Riemann’s insights were further developed by Eugenio Beltrami, Elwin Bruno Christoffel, and the Italian school under Gregorio Ricci and Tullio Levi-Civita. Later, their work turned out to be just what Einstein needed for General Relativity. Einstein was interested in very large regions of space, whereas Riemann’s vision for physics lay in the very small. Even so, it all goes back to Riemann’s lecture.
