Chapter Ten

Dice

Slater eyed me without masking his scorn.

“So, I hear that a celebration is in order, Gray,” he growled sarcastically.

“Sir?”

I felt my hands close at my side as I steeled myself to stare at him. It was impossible for me to look at him when I knew the truth about who he was and what he was doing, but what choice did I have? When he had called me into his office that morning, I had been afraid that he had caught wind of the fact that I was onto him. Turns out, he was onto me.

“You’re a shifter now, aren’t you?”

I balked, but I nodded quickly.

“Yes, sir, I am,” I conceded, wondering who the hell had told him.

“Were you going to inform me of this change?” he growled.

“Of course, sir. I…” I faltered, unsure of what excuse I could use that would placate him. “I wanted to ensure that I was in complete control of my abilities before I bothered you with them.”

Slater snorted loudly, rudely.

“Are you suggesting that you lack control, Gray?” he asked. I swallowed a groan of dismay.

“No, sir. I’m simply trying to get a handle on my newfound powers.”

“Powers?” Slater sounded incensed at the word. “You think you’re more powerful now, do you?”

“No. Sir,” I fumbled, wondering if he was mad that I was a wolf or that he had been so late to know.

It’s probably a combination of the two.

“I bet you expect special favors now,” Slater went on. “To run on missions with the others.”

“I…” I did expect to run on missions with the others, but I could plainly see that Slater had other ideas. “I don’t expect anything will change.”

I wondered if he could read the blatant lie in my face. I was sure he could.

Slater studied my face for a long moment, and I could almost see the wheels turning in his head.

“You’ll train with the others in the field,” he said finally, and I felt a mixture of hope and worry. “But you’re still on communications for now.”

I nodded, unsure if I should be grateful or not.

“We have a new mission next week. Succubus. I’ll email you the comm details so that you can get started.”

I felt a shiver of concern shoot through me.

Is this the mission I heard him talking about with General Drake? Is this the one where he intends to wipe out an entire area?

My gut churned nervously, and I cringed.

“Why are you staring at me like that, Gray?” Slater demanded. “You have something to say?”

“No, sir!” I said.

“Then you’re dismissed.”

He waved me away, and I leapt to my feet from my spot to salute him.

“Thank you, sir!”

I pivoted and headed out of his office, my brain whirling. There had been a lot to process for such a short conversation. Slater knew about me. I knew about him. There was a new mission upcoming.

Succubus. That did not sound promising at all.

I made my way across the compound, my cell ringing in my pocket as I moved.

“Hello?”

“Hey, handsome,” Anna purred in my ear.
