Chapter Sixteen

TJ

"TJ, I can't believe what has happened to your parents' old place, and you were in there when it happened? Oh, God! Are you okay?" Marty squeaked as she sat on the sofa beside me.

"I'm fine, Marty. Really."

"I understand that Carson happened by and got you out. You were incredibly lucky."

"I was. I'm also lucky to have Carson," I replied, glancing toward where he sat at the dining room table, sorting through some paperwork he'd brought home from the shop.

"I can't even imagine something so dreadful. I mean, aside from almost dying, you've lost everything."

"Well, not everything. I had already moved a good many of my things over here, so I still have the essentials."

"I'm surprised you hadn't moved more. I mean, most women move all their things once they get married."

"I suppose, but I guess I just didn't see the hurry. Everything was just next door, and we still need to make some changes here to accommodate my stuff."

"It doesn't look like you've even started?" she said, glancing around at what most women would call bachelor decor.

I'd never really paid attention to it before. I mean, I'd noticed it, but it wasn't my house, so I'd never considered what someone else might think about it. It wasn't that it was bad; it was just very masculine—all browns, greens, reds, earth tones to suit a man's taste.

"Well, you know how it is when you're still honeymooning. Things just tend to take a backside to spending personal time together," I told her, winking.

"Oh, right. Of course," she said, blushing.

It seemed to have achieved the results I wanted, to make her stop asking too many questions. She was a nice lady but a bit too nosey at times. I noticed Carson trying to hide a grin as he looked down at his work, so I'd apparently amused him in the process of making excuses.

"Anyway, I guess we'll have to work on that a bit more."

"Babe, I'm going to grab a shower and change. I need to get back down to the shop and go over some things with Josh."

"Okay, hon," I replied as he got up and retreated into the master bedroom, shutting the door behind him.

"Should I go?" she asked, seeming to take offense somehow.

"No, of course not. You're fine."

"I just noted he went to the bedroom instead of the shower like he said. I thought maybe I'd overstayed my welcome."

"The bath is in the bedroom."

"Oh, how silly of me. That must be inconvenient when someone is trying to sleep and the other needs to get a shower or bath."

"No. Not at all. We have a guest bath upstairs, as well."

"I should have known. There aren't many homes these days with a single bathroom, but sometimes older homes like this still do."

There was some part of me that felt like I was being tested, but it was likely just me feeling guilty or transparent. I brushed it off and moved the conversation along, noting that her drink was getting low.

"Would you like some more tea?" I asked.
