Chapter 18
Lionel
When I laid eyes on Jaz in the parking lot, my heart started racing. I couldn't believe my eyes when she showed up.
Her presence alone was enough to reignite my determination and push me to continue my battle to win her back.
Weâve lost way too much time together. Iâm tired of giving in to her requests and letting her get away with ignoring me.
But in a fraction of a second, her entire demeanour shifted, her body tensing up. In a panic, she pivoted and fled in the opposite direction.
After following her, I scanned the parking lot, but there was no sign of her.
Please tell me I didnât lose her again.
Frustration overwhelmed me as I realised how close I had come. I need her back.
Itâs been five years. Five years too long. Looking back, I realise I should've put in more effort. I should have returned home right away when she did.
My odds might have been better if I had. I wish I had spoken to her before I left. I should have kept trying.
Now, I've resigned myself to the fact that she had sought comfort in the arms of someone else. Hunter Williams, of all people.
No matter how hard I chastised myself, I couldn't have left the team. Being the new guy, I had to prove myself.
I had to show my deep desire for this opportunity, setting aside the anguish of a broken heart. When I found out I could finally return home, I booked the earliest flight available.
This is my last shot at reconciliation. Although I always sent her gifts, this is my first visit back here since leaving for school.
I couldn't bear the thought of her getting married to someone else. She was mine â she is mine. Mine to love, mine to care for, mine to marry and mine to wake up to.
But no matter how hard I try, I need to face reality. Maybe I should start considering the possibility that I have lost her for good.
Am I ready?
Unable to locate her, I return to the restaurant to get the flowers I had bought. Before heading home, I thank the server for his attentive service and leave a generous tip on the table.
Making my way to the house, I slow down when I get to Jazâs. I'll place the flowers near the entrance, so someone can see them.
Judging from her wedding decorations, sunflowers are still her favourite.
Stepping out of my car, I notice an unfamiliar vehicle parked in her driveway. Maybe it is owned by someone they know. It's been a while that I've been away, so I won't necessarily recognise everyone.
Walking up the driveway, I pause next to the car, straining to hear any signs of movement inside. As soon as I peek inside, I knew it was one of the worst choices I had ever made.
There, I find Hunter and Jaz engaged in a passionate embrace, his hand caressing her thigh.
Amid my despair, my phone rings, drawing their attention towards me. The bouquet leaves my hand, soaring through the air as I return to my vehicle.
