Electrical sound recording arrived in 1925, thanks to research from Western Electric and Bell Telephone Laboratories (both part of American Telephone and Telegraph). The development rendered the old acoustic recording systems redundant overnight—the electrical microphone was more powerful and more sensitive than the old recording horn, revolutionising the recording process, and as the new technology and equipment were made available to the record industry on payment of a royalty for their use.1 The recording engineers needed to learn new skills or become redundant themselves, the performers found a new freedom, and Britain’s record buyers fell in love with a boy soprano.
