CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

Prince Oded gloated. He couldn’t help it. This was a vision come true, a magnificent spectacle that only he, a deserving leader of assassins and future king, had ever managed to accomplish.

He sat in a bunker, away from his family’s lavish home, somewhere near Dubai. The place had been built and paid for before Oded’s father noticed his son’s irregularities, and he didn’t know about it. Now that his parents had cut him off from all funds and written him out of their will – Oded needed it.

Along with all the money and influence he’d been able to garner through the years.

All in all, he’d been having five teams tortured around the clock. Five teams meant the pain of thirty two men and women. Keeping up with it all was difficult, but Oded had done his best to savour it, to taste it from afar.

He sat bare-chested, in his boxer shorts. When intense pain filled one of the fourteen monitors before him, the boxer shorts came down. When Oded was happy with his result, he reached for popcorn, soda and sandwiches and settled back to watch the next torture.

The Swango had done well; handing some of their captives off to other mercenary groups whilst they concentrated on the main offenders. He had not been pleased he’d first learned that the Swango didn’t have enough personnel to carry out all the interrogations, but the alternative had worked out well, affording him some wonderful, diverse images over this two-day torture marathon.

Oded remained desperate to find out where the other four nuclear weapons were hidden. These two days had to yield results. He would fulfil the dead Blood King’s desires along with his own. And after he had detonated them all and the dust settled, Oded would own the Middle East.

Still, finding out what these five black marketeers knew was a fun start. He knew their names by heart – the leaders at least. There was Freud, LeeYung, Thindrel, Horne and Kenzie. At least two of these fools knew the whereabouts of the nukes. The rest didn’t matter. They were excess flesh that would end up rotting in some insignificant dump.

Fourteen scenes of torture were being played out on the screens before him. Oded was practically gibbering, drooling with pleasure. He squirmed in his leather seat, scooped candy into his mouth, and divided his views between them, wishing that it would never end.

He imagined that his heroes – the Blood King and the Devil – would had done something similar. He wondered if he could change his name from Oded to something cooler – the Sand Demon perhaps. At this stage, anything was possible.

He would attain lofty heights, walk high, walk on the heads of all those who doubted him.

Oded made calls. He listened not only to pain-filled screams but also to what was gleaned: information forced from stretched and bloody mouths. He asked the Swango to offer up certain questions, to speed up or slow down the process depending on how much he was enjoying himself.
