Chapter 7

The Battle of the Bayou

Christina, perched like a hawk on the motel roof, her eyes sharp as she scanned the ghostly streets below. "This ain't just about takin' down some mindless rotters or metal-head cyborgs," she said, her voice heavy with a mix of anger and resolve. "We're up against a whole damn system that's been playin' us for fools for too long." Her words hit hard, vibrating the silent vows of each member of the crew, all too familiar with being cast aside by a society that saw them as nothing more than disposable.

Down in the shadows, Cheese found an unexpected bond with a kid from the resistance. The boy, eyes wide with curiosity, bombarded Cheese with questions about his cyborg parts. "Yo, you real under all that metal?" the kid asked, his innocence cutting through Cheese's usual stoic exterior. Through these moments, Cheese started to see himself differently, not just as some high-tech machinery, but as someone who could connect, feel, and maybe even belong.

As dawn crept over the horizon, the crew huddled together, their faces lit by the first light of day. They were more than survivors now; they were a family, united by a cause that burned brighter than any fear. "We got this, y'all," Janisha declared, her eyes blazing with determination. "Silver Spires won't even see us comin'."

That night, around the flickering campfire, their faces were like pages of a storybook of struggle and strength. Janisha, her gaze reflecting the flames, spoke up, "Remember, we ain't just fightin' to stay alive. We're fightin' for a day when nobody's called 'undesirable' no more."

Up on the roof, Christina was a silent sentinel, her laser crossbow in hand. She let loose a bolt, silent but deadly, taking out a rotter with a clean shot to the head. The body hit the ground with a thud, a stark reminder of the 90-day nightmare that had turned the city into a feeding ground for these flesh-hungry monsters.

Mara called in and dropped a bombshell on Soul. "We got a snitch our ranks, feedin' them the 411. But we're closer to takin' down Polar than he thinks." Her words sparked a fire of hope in the crew.

The mission was clear: get that police tank and bust into the government's systems. The crew, geared up and ready, felt the weight of the task ahead. "We gotta move fast and smart," Janisha whispered, her eyes scanning the haunted park that stood between them and the tank.

That night Janisha found herself crouched behind a crumbling wall, her breaths quick and shallow. Her eyes, sharpened by countless battles, surveyed the desolate landscape. The quiet was deceptive, a treacherous prelude to the chaos that loomed.

Christina, her curvy figure etched against the skyline, picked off the wandering rotters, clearing a path. "Y'all head straight to the tank. I got your backs," she called down, her voice steady and reassuring.

Von’s voice, once their guiding light, now flickered with a sinister undertone from her wristband. “Move north. The path is clear,” he instructed, his words sounding cold.
