“Do all sea captains have a touch of the pirate in them?” She tried to make the words light, but her voice shook. The intense pull she felt to Stokes was a new experience. It went deeper than simple attraction.

“We all dance a line between honor and survival.”

“Where are you now?”

“That is hardly a fair question. Storms and sirens circle in equal measure.”

There was no easy reply to that. She was used to propositions and promises from lovers, but Stokes didn’t give those lightly. Then again, he was no ordinary man. He was a mystery she couldn’t yet solve.

She linked her arms behind his neck, meeting his dark gaze.

“Am I leading you astray?” she asked softly.

His eyes widened slightly, surprise evident—maybe she was, and she’d just pointed it out. She couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at her lips.

“I’m not certain,” he replied. “I’m out of practice where dalliance is concerned.”

“Dalliance,” she repeated, tasting the word. “I like the sound of that.”

“Shall I describe the dance steps? How a couple comes together and draws apart, circling until the final crescendo in the song?”

He backed her against the rail, supporting her with one strong arm. They fit together, a match in height and curve. She felt incredibly safe, as if nothing could touch her as long as she was in his embrace. Nothing, of course, but Stokes himself. This was the moment when she’d usually invite a lover to her bed, but she felt shy somehow. She wanted to get this right.

“Show me,” she whispered. “I already know you can dance.”

He slid one hand upward from her hip, trailing his fingers over the dip in her waist. His touch left a tingle of electricity in its wake, so sensuous she gasped and closed her eyes. It felt as if her entire body sparkled.

“Oh.” There were no better words.

Then he found her breast, robbing her of even that much speech. Her core seemed to melt and explode at the same time. Their lips met, hot and needy, his tongue seeking entry to her mouth. He tasted of salt and storm, warmth and wildness. Tessa found the hem of his shirt and ran her hands beneath it, finding the smooth skin of his back.

“I want you,” she breathed into his ear.

His entire body tensed. “Are you certain?”

“Why not?” She gazed into his eyes, fascinated by the reflection of the moon in their depths. “Or are you actually a spirit?”

His eyes glittered. “I assure you I am very much alive. In fact, I am more invincible than most.”

“Do I still frighten you?”

“Only the way a feast frightens a starving man. There is peril in wanting something so much.”

His words awakened her curiosity, but other impulses won out. She curled her fingers in his shirt front, ready to drag him inside.

The ship’s horn gave a low blast, startling them both. They parted with a guilty start, as if they’d been the cause of the alarm. Then she noticed the rhythm of the motors change. The vessel was slowing.
