Three days later, after Jalinda had had time to recover, and to receive several hours’ instruction in the ways of the Trestrimar from a kind middle-aged aunt of her bridegrooms, they married her on the same platform where Jera and Korda had received their terrible discipline.

The tribe was overjoyed to welcome Pag, Hed, and Kar home, and just as happy to receive Jalinda into their midst. There seemed no talk at all of what it might mean in the broader, galactic scheme of things, and Jalinda wondered whether anyone of the Trestrimar even knew from where she had arrived, or that a place called Sherdon existed. Or once existed, she thought with a lump in her throat.

All Pag would say about it was that Mara would always be safe for the barbarians of the ten tribes, and she could see how that would be true… unless the empire decided it had a vested interest in destroying the place utterly. Kar added that the empire would never resort to galactic bombardment, because they needed their barbarian mercenaries too much. Hed, of course, said nothing.

While she waited for her wedding she stayed with the widowed aunt, who functioned as the matriarch of Pag and his brothers’ family, though of course the only ruler of the family was Pag’s uncle Gef—Aunt Yora’s brother. It was very strange being naked all the time with the naked Yora, at first, but Jalinda found she became increasingly used to it.

“Believe me,” Yora said at one point, “soon, when your husbands put clothes on you—like a breast harness or your training belt, or even the sort of cunt jewelry men like to buy sometimes from the traveling peddlers—you will find it much more shameful than you ever find being naked.”

Jalinda blushed and said nothing, because though she had never heard of cunt jewelry she somehow knew exactly how shameful it would be to have to wear it because one—or all—of her husbands had told her she must, because he wanted her to wear it while he fucked her.

After a moment of getting up her courage, though, she had said to Yora, “Could you explain about… about the need for… you know?”

Yora frowned for a moment, and then light seemed to dawn in her mind, and she laughed, though not in a mocking way. “We don’t pay much attention to the way other people do things, around the galaxy,” she said, “so I’d forgotten that you civilized off-worlders have… what do you call it? The thing that makes you blush?”

“Modesty?” Jalinda said, very surprised at the turn the conversation had taken. “But didn’t you just say that when your husband put that… stuff on you—made you wear it—you felt shame?”

Yora nodded. “Of course we have shame,” she said. “Otherwise the men of the Trestrimar couldn’t keep their wives in line and craving their cocks as they should.”

It was Jalinda’s turn to frown, as something below her tummy seemed to awake with a little flash of heat
