Chapter 10

Shadow

How could I make her understand? The words I was saying were being wrenched from my lips. I had no control over them. But I had to get them out. If she destroyed this baby, she would destroy herself. I could tell. She was already in love with the tiny being, and I was as well.

“I’ll love the baby like my own,” I swore against her lips. “You have my word.”

To prove my point, I slid down the bed, pulled up the over-sized shirt from the hospital, and pressed my lips to her belly.

I felt, more than heard, Katie’s sob, and I hoped it was one of relief, rather than sadness.

“Will you make love to me?” Katie whispered.

“I’d love to.” I said, then glanced up at her. “Are you sure you’re strong enough?”

She nodded. “Definitely.”

I trailed my lips up her flesh, taking a moment to nuzzle at her small breasts and lick her tight little nipples.

She gasped and arched up into my mouth, her hands threading into my hair. So many doubts and worries wove through me, and yet I couldn’t stop touching her.

What would she think of me when she found out about all the things I’d done in the past? When she learnt the reason they called me Shadow, was because I lived in the shadows? A creature who didn’t dare step into the bright sunlight for fear of complete rejection. I didn’t fit in the real world. I didn’t fit anywhere really.

I’d spent my adulthood alone.

Now this perfect woman had crossed my path, and I knew I didn’t deserve her.

Her, or her child. But I’d be damned if I was going to waste another moment of loving her, because who knew what tomorrow would bring? For either of us.
