1995 – Pueblo, CO

The six-year-old Erin tore up the stairs, a door slamming in the distance. Erin’s mother stood at the open front door, the new neighbor girl looking up at her with big, shocked eyes.

“I’m sorry, honey. I guess Erinbeth doesn’t want to play today and make new friends. Why don’t you come back tomorrow?”

1995 - Pueblo, CO

“Honey, you’ve got the highest grade in your class,” Bill Riggs said, trying to convince his daughter. “You should be so proud that you were invited to participate.”

“Yeah, Erin. You’ll kick butt in the spelling bee,” Charlie agreed, glancing at his sister across the dinner table from him. The girl remained quiet, pushing her food around her plate.

“Listen, honey,” Janice, Erin’s mother said, voice soft. She covered her youngest child’s hand with hers. “You’ll do wonderfully. We’ll all come to watch, and win or lose, which I know you’ll win, we’ll all cheer you on, and then we can go out for dinner at the Dew Drop for some good pizza. What do you say?” She smiled, big and bright.

Erin chewed on her lower lip, watching the pretty pattern the mashed potatoes made in the gravy. She wasn’t sure. “I’ll look stupid.” She pouted.

“No you won’t!” the entire table said at once. She grinned her great big, missing tooth grin.

“It’ll be cool!” Joel gushed, getting enthusiastic nods from his brothers and family.
