âI DONâT know. I get mixed signals, but why should I care?â
Pete slumped on the futon in John and Cleoâs living room and brooded, having jogged straight there from his unsatisfying tryst with Aidan.
âYou knew he was a player from the get-go,â said John, sprawled out next to him. âDonât let Cleo hear you moaning or youâll get a big, fat âI told you so.ââ
âGood sheâs asleep.â Pete eyed the closed bedroom door. âButâwell, okay, heâs a player. He even said so himself. But neither of us are into commitment, so whatâs wrong with some uncommitted sex? Whatâs the big deal?â He made a frustrated sound.
âDonât be a moron. Youâre already hung up on the guy, and youâve only had sex with him two times.â
âThree.â
âThree? Oh, right, the time he groped you in the closet andââ
âPantry.â
âDo you hear yourself? Jesus, Pete. If you keep having sex with him, itâll turn into a big deal pretty fucking fast. For you, not for him. And Aidan knows it. Thatâs what heâs trying to tell you.â
âIt wouldnât be a big deal! Itâs just hooking up.â He flounced onto his stomach and mumbled, âWhy will no one believe me?â
John gave him a look that was part amusement, part exasperation. âPete, you dimwit. Methinks thou doth protest too much.â
âFuck you, and Shakespeare too.â
He wanted to punch John, who was laughing into a pillow on the futon, but it wouldâve taken too much energy.
âSo you wanna crash here tonight?â John asked once heâd stopped laughing.
âMaybe I should go home and check on Angie. Did you talk to her?â
âI called but didnât get anything out of her. She said she was fine and she wished everyone would stop worrying about her. Whatâs bugging her?â
âThe creep sheâs dating.â
âAngieâs dating someone? You mean Brian?â
âHa, I wish. No. Someone sheâs been seeing for the last few months, but she wonât tell me who, and now sheâs all upset.â
âHuh. I have no idea. I wonder if Cleo knows. Bummer that sheâs upset, though.â
âYeah. I guess Iâll go home.â Pete rolled off the futon and was at the door when John spoke again.
âHey.â
âWhat?â
âBack to Aidan. You think maybe thereâs something youâre getting out of this situation?â
Donât start with the psych babble, Pete thought darkly. âWhat dâyou mean?â
John propped himself up on his elbows. âJust that itâs pretty fucking safe to be hung up on a guy whoâs unavailable.â
âSafe?â Pete had no idea what John was talking about. âAnd Iâm not hung up on him.â
âWhatever you say. Think about it.â John lay back down with a yawn. âLater, dude.â
Pete walked down Rugby Road in a funk. Safe. What the fuck? What does wanting to hook up with Aidan have to do with being safe?
