Chapter Seventeen

Officer Ganzer left Tee and his attorney in the interrogation room. Since they never issued the Miranda warning, and no proof to keep Tee in custody, they had no choice but to release him with a warning not to leave the area. But now that the Rykland PD had an idea where to focus the investigation, they needed to come up with proof and fast.

“Well done,” Steve said, addressing her as she entered the viewing room. “I’m impressed. He held his own until you slipped him up.”

“Thanks. When he walked in, he had guilt written all over his face. I just had to get it out of him. Now the hard part is proving it.” Alivia took a seat next to Steve and reached for a sealed bottle of water that was kept on the table. “Did Tony get back from Madison yet?”

Steve pulled his phone out to check the text that came in earlier. “He texted forty-five minutes ago when he fueled up in Stevens Point. He should be here anytime.” No sooner did Steve mention it, Tony walked in the door.

Alivia smiled at Tony. “Welcome back!”

She was in the best mood she’d been in, in over a year. Her successful interrogation overshadowed all the personal problems that dominated her life.

“How did your trip to the metropolis go? Productive?”

Steve and Tony chuckled at her description of Madison since the largest town in their vicinity was Wausau, which only had thirty-nine thousand people versus Madison with a quarter of a million.

“I have nothing concrete. She didn’t see much. Cybil was all about going home with Mitch. So she’s a dead end. How did the interviews go? I hope you had more luck than I did.” He sat in a chair across from Steve and Alivia and pulled out his notebook from his interview earlier with Cybil.

Steve started. “The first two interviews didn’t give up much intel. The guys were squeaky clean. But Alivia tripped up Teagan, the last guy she interviewed, and now we have a lead. We just need to find the proof. But it’s a start. She did good.”

Alivia blushed at the praise Steve gave her.

Tony grinned. “Excellent. Now let’s nail the bastard and get him off the street. Here’s what I got from Cybil…”
