Spend Time with a Pet
I have two cats, Hazel and Daphne, and they are the most loyal, loving, and emotionally intuitive animals in the world. I tell people that adopting them settled down my life. Let me tell you why.
People with ADHD have a lot of intrinsic difficulty with managing their time, remaining organized, and feeling overwhelmed. Pets can help you build some structure into your schedule. They eat regularly, they expect walks at certain times, and they need certain bathroom privileges. Incorporating those new parameters makes you more intimately aware of time and adhering to a schedule.
ADHD also often presents as difficulty maintaining focus and hyperactivity. People may sometimes struggle with fidgeting and restlessness. Having a pet encourages you to get out and expend some of that energy with them.
The main reason I will almost always support having a pet is that the amount of love and emotional support you get from a pet is unparalleled. Navigating through ADHD can make you feel isolated. Dealing with years of frustration about being the recipient of repeated rejection and criticism can critically wound your self-esteem. Pets donât care about nuances, or how you did at work, or if you were a little weird at a meeting. They just love you. I canât think of anything more wholesome.
Having a pet is not something that you should undertake until you are ready to provide that animal with a good home. However, if the timing is right, a pet can be a wonderful addition to your life.
