to say that all experience involves the recognition of particular items as falling under concepts, but it is not clear what this has to do with the possibility of self-ascribing experiences. In particular, it has yet to be explained why the conceptualization of experience requires the employment of concepts such as that of 'experience' or 'subject of experience'. As Harrison remarks in connection with the question of whether a pure sense-datum subject would be capable of bringing his experiences under concepts: All that is necessary for this is that the experiencer should be able to distinguish qualitatively between his experiences. He must, that is, be able to use judgements which contain general (or descriptive) parts and particular (or referential) parts . . . He must be able to use, that is, concepts such as 'redness' or 'loudness', but it is not necessary that he should be able to use concepts such as 'subject of experience' . . . For we would be perfectly satisfied if such an experiencer could describe his experiences, even if he were perfectly incapable of classifying them as 'experiences' or saying that they were 'his'.
