Chapter Eight

FLORENCE

Kale could not sleep. There was no reason - the room was spacious and quiet, but her mind was actively sorting through the events of the day. Fiona was an attractive, knowledgeable, closed-in woman. At six o'clock, after a few hours of restless sleep, Kale got up and decided to explore the hotel's swimming pool. She had not anticipated a swim, but had put her swimsuit in as a matter of course. Now she draped her silk gown over it, slung a towel round her neck and cautiously left the bedroom. The hotel was busy, the lobby area piled high with baggage ready to be loaded for departing coaches, and she followed the instructions down to the basement. She saw the shimmering surface of the pool and one lone figure determinably swimming a strong crawl up and down.

Kale removed her robe and stood at the edge of the pool. The face of the swimmer looked up and Kale saw, despite the goggles and a thin plastic racing cap, it was Fiona. Cautiously Kale walked to the deep end and gritted her teeth before diving into the pool, the coldness of the water giving her a sudden start as she pulled her goggles from round her neck and adjusted them over her eyes. She started to swim alongside Fiona, quickly realising that she was out-classed by a younger, stronger swimmer. Kale did ten lengths before halting and removing her goggles, seeing Fiona clambering from the pool clad in a black swimsuit that showed off a figure that had been concealed beneath the tent-like dresses.

"Good morning, Fiona," Kale called as she heaved herself up the step.

"You slept well…" She hesitated, and Kale knew Fiona could not say her name again.

"You managed Kale last night." Her voice was light, almost flirtatious.

Fiona stared at her, but did not answer, and Kale watched as she walked across to the ladies’ changing rooms, into the communal showering cubicle, turned on one of the three shower heads and stood beneath it. Usually Kale would strip off, showering naked, but now she hesitated, seeing that Fiona was still self-consciously showering in her swimsuit. Kale wished she was young with firm flesh, not old, thin with no bulges, but she had to admit things sagged regardless of all the exercise. Perhaps stripping off would give too much away. Vanity, for God's sake! She was too old and yet, she stood in her dripping swimsuit, lathering her hair. Fiona gave Kale a side-glance, seeing the small tattoo on the left shoulder, and Kale swished the water from her eyes and saw the stare.

She said with a faint smile, "A bluebird … days of somewhere over the rainbow, only my rainbow has ended without the pot of gold."

"My rainbow never began," Fiona replied and then stopped.

"Always time…"

"I doubt it."

"Hey, that sounds like a defeatist, and I wouldn't put you down as someone who is easily defeated."

Fiona gave her an embarrassed smile and emerged from the shower to drape herself in
