The coach pulled out of Siena and Kale wished the incident hadn't intruded into what had been a happy memory. George was sitting in the midst of the coach, regaling another old man with his incident. She glanced up and suddenly met Fiona's eyes. They grinned as they heard,

"We old folk have to stick together … they forget the war."

"Pisa," Fiona was saying as the coach sped along the highway, and Kale closed her eyes, waking suddenly as the back seat lurched and she realised they must have detoured away from the towns to eventually stop in a large coach park with what to Kale looked like a very basic restaurant.

"I understand you can get a restaurant meal or a snack or buy sandwiches," Fiona said as Giovanni swerved the coach round to park alongside another coach. "We can allow an hour before we go on to Pisa for the night," she continued as the doors opened.

Kale watched as the coach party ran like lemmings to join queues to select their food or hasten to the restaurant. She hovered; it all looked basic and grim. She glanced across at Fiona, who stood with a look of uncertainty on her face.

"Basic!" Kale murmured as Fiona strode past her in the direction of the restaurant and merely nodded.

Kale walked into the closed area where a snack bar was operating in a chaotic manner and glanced at the food on offer, then followed a group to the pizzeria. Seeing the queue, she decided her first visit would be to find a toilet, as stops were few and far between, and the washroom - delicately called - on the coach was, the driver said, not to be used, probably because he did not wish to empty and clean it each night after the drive. Not even, it seemed, in an emergency.

Kale finally found the toilet, well hidden behind a shed. It proved to be one shared by men and women, and by the state and stench it could well have been shared by animals as well. Kale stood outside the door and shuddered, but knew she had no option and that soon a queue would be forming. Tentatively she pushed the dirty paint-peeling wooden door open with her foot and stared into the darkness. The floor was wet, and she bent down before entering and hastily rolled her trouser legs up to just below the knee. She made sure her hat was secure, her credit cards tucked into her pocket and her sunglasses removed from her eyes and placed in another pocket.

The door closed behind her and a thin shaft of light came from the wooden slatted glassless window as she managed to push the rusty bolt into position. Then with a shudder, and wishing she'd not drunk the beer in Sienna, she groped her way, determined not to touch the seat with any part of her anatomy. She shuddered as she saw the pile of newspaper cuttings hanging from a piece of string on the wall and wished nature had not made her thus.
