UNEXPECTED CALLS

Istood facing the pay phone, my mouth wide open, my heart racing. Whoever was on the other end of that line . . . whoever was behind that cold, robotic voice . . . they had gotten into my house. They had taken Hannah, the person who’s the closest thing to a mother that I’ve had since my own mother passed away. I felt my stomach twist, and wondered if I was going to throw up.

Don’t hurt her! I wanted to scream. Don’t you dare even touch her!

That’s when I realized I’d dropped the phone, and in doing so, had possibly cut the only connection I had with Hannah’s abductors. Suddenly panicked, I grabbed the phone and held the receiver to my ear.

“Hello? Hello? Are you still there?”

But all I heard was the beep beep beep of a dead line. Hannah’s abductors had hung up.

Placing the phone back in its cradle, I took a deep breath. My heart was racing, and I could feel adrenaline running through my veins, making me want to run, fight, scream—anything but sit here on this stupid pay phone. But I also knew I couldn’t handle this alone. Digging desperately for all the change in my pocket, I dialed one number I knew by heart: the River Heights Police Department.

“River Heights PD.”

“Hi,” I said quickly, “this is Nancy Drew. Is Officer Yang available?”

“Hold on.”

There was a pause of a minute or so before Officer Yang picked up the phone. “Miss Drew, let me tell you, you have some nerve—”

I swallowed. Oh, right. The last time I’d seen Officer Yang, I’d kind of been ditching him in a fake popcorn-fueled catastrophe.

“I know,” I said quickly, cutting him off. “I don’t have time to get into detail here, Officer Yang, but truly: I had no other choice, and I meant no disrespect. But something has happened and I desperately, desperately need your help.”

There was another pause, and then Officer Yang snorted. “Have you been kidnapped again?”

“No.” As briefly as I could, I explained to Officer Yang what had happened. He perked up when I got to the part about the stranger putting Hannah on the phone.

“You’re sure it was her?”

“Positive,” I replied, without hesitation. I’d know her voice anywhere. She’d practically raised me. “Listen, I know you don’t completely believe that I was kidnapped yesterday or that Green Solutions is involved, but I really need you to check out their River Heights warehouse and see if Hannah is there.”

Officer Yang asked me for a few more details, but soon promised that he and his partner were getting into their car now. “We’ll check it out immediately.”

“Thank you, Officer Yang. And, really—I’m sorry for ditching you.”

He didn’t reply, but after a moment, promised: “I’ll be in touch soon.” I gave him the pay phone number, then hung up.

My next call was to my father. I wasn’t sure what I expected. If whoever had Hannah had taken her from the house, I realized, there was a chance my father was in danger too.
