Chapter Eleven

Konner didn’t stop to rest until he was sure everything was in place. He’d done his research before crossing the border and found a small remote town in Alaska where there was a history of women disappearing. It made him sick to think of what had happened to all those poor young women, but he couldn’t let himself feel too much, because Angelica was about to be one of them.

The first thing he did was plant some of her clothing, including a hat that he’d been sure had strands of Dakota’s hair stuck in it, that he’d snuck from her house before leaving, on the edge of town, just off the highway where it would be found if anyone bothered to look. Then he made his way to the nearest bar, where he started asking around, pretending to be a concerned cousin of a missing woman. He told anyone who would listen what she’d been wearing the last time she was seen. He was careful not to give too many details, but just enough to plant the seed that there was another missing young woman.

Once he’d planted the seed in the pub, he moved on to the local shops and finally to the police department, where he was told that he was welcome to file a missing person’s report, but that it wasn’t likely to amount to anything.

If Angelica had been hitchhiking on that particular stretch of road, either the wild animals had gotten her, or, more likely, according to law enforcement, the same guy who’d been terrorizing young women for decades up there had found a new victim.

Konner tried to swallow his disgust at the officers who appeared more interested in scrolling through their phones and comparing hunting stories while they drank stale coffee than they were solving actual crimes. They spoke candidly about the dozens of women who’d gone missing over the years around their town, and how the perpetrator, whomever he was, never left a trace. Every lead they’d ever had led to a dead end. The story was corroborated by everyone he came across who bothered to speak to him about it at all.

“Even been featured on Dateline,” the cashier at the grocery told him with a trace of what sounded a little too much like pride. “The highway’s been dubbed the Highway of Heartbreak. Ya know, ’cause of all the missing—”

“Yeah. I got it.”

Konner shook his head and made note of everything he heard that would back up his story of Angelica’s disappearance.

On his way out of town in the late twilight hours, he placed an anonymous call to the police station, reporting the sighting of a woman’s discarded belongings on the edge of town.

After experiencing the apathy of the townspeople, never mind local law enforcement, Konner didn’t have much faith that the evidence would be tested for DNA. But if they were, the strands of hair should be enough to prove it was Angelica who’d been the latest victim of the Highway of Heartbreak, and King would have no choice but to believe the story he was about to tell him.
