I run my tongue over my fangs, a cocktail of sensations taking over me. Fuck me, this is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before, and I’ve been alive for centuries. The pleasure of having this woman, along with the smell of the watchers’ blood starts a mania in my veins. I let Helena down to her feet slowly, her body sliding on mine, her perky breasts pushing through the lace top of her dress. I’ve just eased out of her, but my cock twitches again, wanting more.

Need courses through me, the need to stick my teeth into her carotid, taking her vampire blood inside of me and making her mine, but I can’t let that happen. If I take this further and bind myself to her, I won’t be able to live without claiming her as my rightful consort. The Prince of Midnight would sense that, minimizing her chances of success.

Frustration turns to anger, and my eyes flush with blood, driving me to crave a feast of blood. When I’m sure that Helena is stable on her feet I whirl around, baring my teeth at the leader, who’s already too close. One glare from my eyes wipes the evil grin off his face, the signs of drunkenness vanishing.

I hiss, my fangs lengthening, my hand with the blade-sharp nails slicing through his cheek, turning his face into a mass of mutilated flesh caked with blood. He drops on his butt, screaming, not so much from the pain but from the terror. He crawls backwards, the others trying to scatter around. I throw myself over the fallen leader, grab his hair and push his head violently to the side, piercing his jugular and expecting that I’ll have to hunt all the others down when I’m done with him, but surprise.

Helena lunges after the guy who brought the others along, throwing him down and pinning him under her.

“Not quite the way you wanted to have me, is it?” she hisses, enjoying the look of horror in his face. As my own victim’s blood flows down my throat, viscous like thick wine, I watch the show.

Helena’s victim struggles to free himself from under her, but he doesn’t stand a chance against her superior vampire strength. This is the first time I’ve seen the look of a true predator on her face, a face that was so kind and accepting of destiny’s whims when I first met her only a month ago. Regret floods me—I’m the reason that kind, vulnerable woman is lost forever. I made the choice in her place, sacrificing her human life to give her eternity as the unwilling savior of the vampire kind, the sacrificial lamb.

But before I can succumb to self-loathing I witness another first—Helena killing with pleasure, sinking her teeth into her screaming victim’s throat, full of satisfaction. But this only gives the others a chance to run away, screaming and drawing attention. I can’t afford to keep drinking until my victim is dry, I have to stop the others from escaping us with their memory of what happened.
