Chapter 17

A problem arose before they could initiate their first agreed upon lesson. Actually, two problems. The first being Whitney Kingston, and the second, the Perkins duo.

“Rider approaching,” Bernardo replied at Kit’s shoulder. Bernardo, or Badger as she’d called him before learning his real name and becoming friends of a sort, was helping her design a greenhouse. Bernardo’s grandson Samuel, as it turned out, had a natural knack for horticulture and was already becoming quite the gardening expert. It was because of his own experiment that they had had bell peppers to add to the meal the night García had visited.

Kit put another post in place. “Probably just Perkins returning with his sister. They are expected any day.”

Kit peeked a glance at Bernardo. He made it clear he was none too happy with her decision to bring a woman of ill-repute to the ranch. He respected her decision, however, and agreed to assist with protecting the young woman in case some of the rowdier, less trustworthy men decided to force unwanted attentions on her.

His lips pursed in a grim line, he answered, “No. There is no wagon.”

Kit stopped straightening the post against the leveling string and looked toward the path leading up to the ranch’s arches. A black horse.

“Kingston,” she guessed.

Bernardo gave her a curious look, “That is a good thing, señorita, no? The faster he proposes, the faster the ranch becomes yours in truth.”

“Or his, rather.” Kit wasn’t too pleased to admit such an ugly consequence.

“Laws are not like in eastern states. Women have more rights here. Whomever you marry, make sure your rights to the ranch are protected.”

She smiled kindly, “Thank you, Bernardo. I promise to do my best.”

She hoped Logan would return before then. He studied law for fun. Her brother had the crazy dream to pursue politics and change laws for the Indian people of the United States. She hoped his plans met with success and he didn’t get killed hunting down whomever murdered Albert Sidney before then. Perhaps he would find the murderer quickly and return here in time to ensure legalities were on her side before any nuptials took place. She gulped.

Kit folded her deerskin gloves and tucked them at the waist of her pants, as there was aught else she could do with them. Guessing that it was Kingston, she excused herself and asked Bernardo to find Samuel to ensure the boy took a break. The kid would work all day and never stop if someone didn’t force him to. She smiled; he was really a great kid. He was going to be one hell of a man someday.

Kit heard some of her cowhands greet Kingston as she sneaked around the back of the horse barn out of view and darted toward the house. How embarrassing! She still didn’t have a housemaid and no refreshments at the ready as he’d requested, and she looked the same sweaty mess as last time he’d met her.

There was nothing to be done about her clothes. It was impractical to change attire just to take another walk and see the man off.
