Chapter 8

Flickering Roman candles illuminated both sides of the driveway like a string of freshwater pearls, leading from the road to the circular lawn in front of Darlington Hall. The marble fountain stood proud in the darkness, underwater filaments bathing each of the smiling white cherubs in light as they poured their water into the pool below. The sound of tires crunching on the gravel driveway announced the arrival of more guests. The vehicles were all gleaming examples of the motor industry’s finest models, and as each car deposited its partygoers, the sound of chatter and laughing increased. Darlington Hall was awash with glamour, designer outfits, famous faces and enthralled visitors.

Having chosen to get herself ready at the Hall, Lucinda had a suite adjoining Zoe’s and it was like old times as the girls prepared for the evening. Lucinda checked her reflection in the mirror, ready to go. She knew Matt would find it hard to resist undoing the intricate silk cords that crisscrossed her breasts to secure her basque. She had sent the top to her favorite Bond Street designer, ordering a sheath silk skirt to be custom-made in the exact same color. She’d also ordered matching long evening gloves and paid an obscene amount of money for the diamante stilettos adorning her pedicured toes. Her blond hair was professionally swept onto her head, a few tantalizing curls trained to suggestively topple onto her shoulders.

But Lucinda Gray didn’t feel comfortable.

“It’s opening night nerves,” assured Zoe.

“This isn’t just butterflies in my tummy, it’s like a battalion of moths crashing around in there.”

“Matt isn’t going to be able to tear his eyes off you in that.” Finished putting on own her makeup, Zoe stepped into her black and barely there ball gown. “How do I look?”

“If you don’t score tonight, then my name’s not Lucinda Gray.”

Much as Lucinda would have like to catch up with Zoe’s news, her duties as hostess summoned her. The string quartet had already set up in its allocated part of the ballroom. A remarkably young-looking DJ had arrived with endless arrays of turntables for the later part of the evening, and throngs of hired waiters rushed to and fro.

Lucinda bumped into Matt as he emerged from the great hall. His black dinner suit made him look taller and impossibly more handsome. Lucinda often wondered why formal dress could make even the most ordinary of men attractive, but for someone like Matt, it transformed his 24/7 sex appeal into something irresistible. The sight of him stirred longings in places deeper than she imagined possible. She’d spent most of the past eight weeks in bed with the man, yet here, dressed in a well-cut outfit, he was still able to take her breath away.

He grinned. “Everything all right?”

She had to swallow to find the words. “Perfect.”

“You look stunning, Luce.” Matt traced his hand down her basque, toying with the silk ties. “I could eat you alive in this.”

“The feeling’s mutual.”

He threw a mischievous grin in the direction of the library.
