Chapter Seventeen

Jada opened her eyes and sat up in bed. She looked at the clock; it was almost one in the afternoon, but she was still tired and wanted to go back to sleep. As much as she wanted to sleep, Jada knew that she had to get up. She had a lot of things that she wanted to do and at this point, there was no telling how much longer she would be in New York. She eased out of bed quietly and hoped that Black wouldn’t wake up. Her intention was to be showered, dressed and out of the room, before he woke up.

After leaving Impressions the night before, Black and Jada returned to her hotel room. It felt a little strange to Jada with them actually going to the room together, but these were strange times. Once she had made herself comfortable, Jada told Black that she was going to call room service and order some champagne, and asked if he wanted something.

At first, he looked at her and thought that this was no time to celebrate, but then he remembered that Jada just liked to drink champagne. “No, champagne is fine.”

While they waited for room service to arrive, they started talking about the arson fire at Cuisine and the bombing at Impressions. Since they were partners in Paraíso, Black and Jada were both very comfortable talking business. He had come to value her input and respect her opinion. Once the champagne was delivered, Jada poured their glasses and discussion continued. Then Jada said, “There really is no telling what or who they are going to go after next.”

“That’s why you’re leaving in the morning,” Black said matter of factly.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re right. There really is no telling what or who they are going to go after next, and that’s why you’re leaving in the morning.”

“No, I’m not. I still have a number of things that I want to get done before I go back to Nassau. I will need to be here for a least another week. Depending on how things progress with Simone, I may need to stay longer,” Jada said calmly, and got up to refill their glasses.

“No. No. That ain’t happening.”

“What do you mean? What isn’t happening?”

“You hangin’ around New York for another couple of weeks. There is too much goin’ on for you to be here, Ms. West.”

“Yes, I understand that; but I just told you that I had a number of things that I have to accomplish before I go back to Nassau. Things that I’ve put off for quite some time.”

“You can come back when this is over.”

“It simply makes more sense for me to get those things done now, while I’m here, instead of leaving now and coming back.”

“Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you … but these are not normal circumstances. Somebody burned down my club and set a bomb at Impressions.”

“If you recall, Mr. Black, I was with you at both locations, so I am well aware of the situation.
